On the road to COP17: Kaveh Zahedi & Astrid Schomaker on agrifood systems and FAO–CBD collaboratio
March 18, 2026

FAO and UN Biodiversity are collaborating to help countries meet biodiversity commitments, a topic discussed at recent SBI-6 meetings in Rome, ahead of COP17 in Armenia. An FAO analysis shows biodiversity loss already undermines agrifood systems and food security in many nations, highlighting the critical need to integrate biodiversity into agrifood policies.

Approaching the 2030 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework deadline, progress requires concrete actions. Countries can implement agroforestry, restore degraded lands, and promote sustainable livestock and aquaculture. These efforts simultaneously advance biodiversity, climate resilience, and food security. Success depends on farmers, producers, and consumers. FAO and UN Biodiversity remain committed to supporting countries in translating global commitments into tangible action.
