Join us for a lively conversation between Mary Power, a leading ecological researcher, and Tom Fleischner, the Institute’s founder, on the role of natural history in inspiring and grounding ecological field study and theoretical advances in the science of ecology. Over several decades, Dr. Power has combined field experiments and long-term, place-based research to study food webs in tropical and temperate rivers, and their linkages to upland and estuarine ecosystems—work that has always been informed by, and infused with, a love of natural history. Mary Power is a Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley and Faculty Director of the Angelo Coast Range Reserve. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow in the California Academy of Sciences, and she has served as president of both the Ecological Society of America and the American Society of Naturalists. Her work was profiled in The Serengeti Rules, a feature film.

Joining him this session was Knowledge Keepers Mary and Robert Maytwayashing, and singer, Cody Courchene. Mary Maytwayashing shared the Ojibwe translation, meaning and significance of the Nibi Water Song she received in a dream. Cody Courchene shared the Turtle Song, Black Bear Song, and Calling In Song, which were translated by Robert Maytwayashing.
