She played a major role in the development and passage of Title IX and other laws prohibiting sex discrimination in education, and has been associated with Title IX longer than any other person. The New York Times has referred to her as the “godmother of Title IX.”

On November 18, WECAN hosted a COP29 press conference where women leaders spoke about the importance of advancing a fossil fuel phaseout and embracing a Just Transition that supports communities and ecosystems. Speakers highlighted the role of climate finance in supporting equitable solutions and ensuring accountability in the Just Transition. Speakers also discussed the efforts of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Speakers included: Eriel Tchekwie Deranger (Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation), Executive Director of Indigenous Climate Action, Canada; Dr. Amiera Sawas, Head of Research and Policy at the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty; and Osprey Orielle Lake, Executive Director of the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), USA.

Ms. Reyes was a driving force behind Zurich’s decision last year to invest $1bn in “green” bonds that finance projects aimed at mitigating climate change.

Cecilia Reyes joined Zurich in 2001 as Regional Manager for Group Investments with responsibility for North America and became Regional Manager for Europe and International Businesses in 2004. From April 2006 until March 2010, she was Head of Investment Strategy Implementation. In April 2010, she assumed her current role as Chief Investment Officer.
