About This Collection

As a result of a United Nations General Assembly resolution passed in December 2008, World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8th each year. This annual event spurred the creation of a special collections around our oceans and the efforts being made in conservation ranging from pollution to habitat restoration to fishing and fisheries.

The special collection continues to grow along with Plastic in Our Oceans and 1Water, with a focus on the challenge of providing clean drinking water to the world population.

Slurry Oil Spill in Chile
July 27, 2016
On Saturday, May 14, bad weather broke an underwater pipe leading from the National Oil Company (ENAP), causing a slurry oil spill in Quintero Bay. One month later, the Oceana Chile team found many oil “pieces” moving through the seabed as a sticky mass, trapping and dragging marine organisms such as the marmola crab, bivalves and gastropods, algae, and more. More than 1,400 tons of material was removed. Currently, the final amount of spilled oil is unknown. This was the third spill accident from ENAP in less than two years.
