As states and the Biden administration begin a push to rapidly electrify the U.S. fleet for climate reasons, policymakers are under increasing pressure to rethink how states and the federal government fund transportation infrastructure and services. For decades, motor fuel taxes have generated the majority of state and federal funds spent on transportation, even if recently these taxes have been losing their purchasing power. However, a shift to electric vehicles will require a new transportation funding model. The speakers will discuss the challenges and opportunities with such options as mileage fees, carbon taxes, higher vehicle registration fees, or a shift entirely away from user-generated revenue. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, half of wetlands in the lower 48 states — an area about the size of Yellowstone — have disappeared since the 1780s. And those that remain are at high risk: In 2023 the U.S. Supreme Court stripped 50 years of federal protection from many of these precious areas, leaving them vulnerable to draining, filling, excavating, and other destructive processes.

Nearly 50% of threatened and endangered species use wetlands for breeding, nesting, feeding, and migration. More than 33% of them live only in wetlands. Losing these water-saturated ecosystems harms water quality, increases vulnerability to flood and climate change, and pushes thousands of animals and plants closer to extinction.ÂÂ

But not all endangered wetland species have designated critical habitat, even though the Endangered Species Act requires it — northern bog turtles, Florida Key deer, salt marsh harvest mice, Santa Cruz long-toed salamanders, and mountain sweet pitcher plants are just a few who desperately need their wetland homes protected.ÂÂ

This video highlights just a few of the species who need more protected critical habitat. Take action for giant garter snakes, mountain lions, and more: Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect more critical habitat for wetland-dependent species.

Plastic in our ocean is a complex issue but it is not rocket science. The change we want to see starts with ourselves because there is no magic bullet or an overnight fix. Ocean Plastics can be solved by accepting responsibility for our own actions and using both Reactive and Preventative Solutions in parallel, in fact, the most gimmicky and fantastical ideas the better. The Seabin Project is just one example of this. #saveourseas Pete Ceglinski, the Aussie surfer who in 2015 successfully crowdfunded an invention designed to rid our waterways of rubbish. The Seabin Project went viral and has quickly become one of the most environmentally promising ways of turning the tide in our planet's war against plastics. It’s a rubbish bin that lives in the water of marinas and collects floating plastics, bottles, bags, oil, fuel and micro-plastics down to 2mm in size. Right now our business activities are 50% for profit and 50% not for profit. The reason for this is that we are in a unique situation where we have innovative technology to capture debris efficiently, but at the end of the day, Seabins are not the solution. Education, Science, Research and Community is the real solution, and so we have built this into our business model with growing success. Dr. Carroll earned his Ph.D. in Immunology from Tufts University and is renowned for his seminal work on the genetic foundations of animal development and evolution. His research, which merges molecular genetics with evolutionary biology, has provided critical insights into the processes driving evolution and biodiversity. Dr. Carroll is also an accomplished author, known for his influential books such as "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" and "The Serengeti Rules," which effectively communicate intricate scientific ideas to a broad readership.
