When we think of waste, we normaly don`t think about fethers. But keratine waste is a big problem in the food industry because it does not decompose easily. Current waste management of fether waste is most often limited to burning them or soaking them in chemicals. Microorganisms help us solve this problem much better. Beti has been passionate about the world of microorganisms since a very early age. She is a Young Researcher at the Microbiology and Microbe Biotechnology Department at the Biotechnical Faculty. Nowadays, Beti is working on her doctorate, researching the decomposition of keratin waste with microbes in the agro-industry. Beti is also very active at raising awareness about science and spreading the knowledge among people. She is a member of Science on the Street (Slo. Znanost na cesti) and has participated in several science slams, including the European Science Slam in which she represented Slovenia in September 2019. Beti's vision is to take projects from laboratory to practice, and is guided by a single idea: ""For those who are curious, the whole world is a laboratory. Beti je mlada raziskovalka na Katedri za mikrobiologijo in mikrobno biotehnologijo Biotehniške fakultete. Zase pravi, da jo je svet mikroorganizmov odnesel že zelo zgodaj. Danes pa, tekom doktorata, z mentorico doc. dr. Mašo Vodovnik in somentorico prof. dr. Romano Marinšek Logar prve v Sloveniji raziskujejo razgradnjo keratinskih odpadkov s pomočjo mikrobov v agroživilski industriji. Beti je zelo aktivna tudi pri ozaveščanju in širjenju znanosti med ljudmi. Je članica ekipe Znanost na cesti, sodelovala je pri večih znanstvenih slamih, med drugim tudi na evropskem znanstvenem slamu, kjer je septembra 2019 predstavljala Slovenijo. Etuaptmumk - Two-Eyed Seeing is explained by saying it refers to learning to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of Western knowledges and ways of knowing ... and learning to use both these eyes together, for the benefit of all. Spoken word artist, current Halifax Slam Master and recently appointed Poet Laureate for the Halifax Regional Municipality, Rebecca Thomas also holds the position of Coordinator of Aboriginal Student Services at the Nova Scotia Community College. Coming from an indigenous background whose family has been greatly impacted by residential schools, Ms. Thomas has come to recognize the lack of prominence given to First Nations perspectives within the history of Halifax. As a Mi’kmaw woman, she embraces the opportunity to bring her cultural voice to the broader public discussion through the Poet Laureate position, and believes that the arts and poetry can help people heal in ways beyond traditional therapies. “Poetry can give a voice to the voiceless. Poetry can make a powerless person feel powerful. This is why I speak,” said Ms. Thomas.

Emi Mahmoud’s talk is a powerful combination of spoken word poetry along with insightful reflections on her childhood as a former refugee from Sudan growing up in Yemen and the United States. Her poems speak to the emotions that bind us all: fear, compassion, strength, vulnerability and ultimately love. (Recorded at TEDxKakumaCamp on June 9, 2018) Sudanese-American Slam Poet and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Emi Mahmoud uses evocative spoken word poetry to build compassion for refugees. An activist, author, a graduate from Yale University and once a refugee herself, Emi was recently appointed as Goodwill Ambassador to the UNHCR. Her new book Sisters’ Entrance, a book of poetry, is challenging perceptions across the world. He crafts drums available through Washpa Production Company in Zia Pueblo, New Mexico. His family, the Southern Slam Dancers and Singers, performed at the Seed Graduate Institute conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in September 2012.
