David Keith reviews the science and technology of solar geoengineering, addressing the following Q’s: how effective could it be in reducing climate risks? What new risks does it entail? What is uncertain? And, finally, how could uncertainty be reduced to a substantial research program? He presents a case for integrating solar geoengineering into a 4D climate policy that includes emissions cuts, carbon removal, and adaptation.

David Keith has worked near the interface between climate science, energy technology, and public policy since ’91. He took first prize in Canada’s national physics prize exam, won MIT’s prize for excellence in experimental physics, and was one of TIME Magazine’s Heroes of the Environment. David is Professor of Applied Physics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, and founder of Carbon Engineering, a Canadian company developing technology to capture CO 2 from ambient air to make carbon-neutral hydrocarbon fuels. Best known for his work on the science, technology, and public policy of solar geoengineering, David led the development of Harvard’s Solar Geoengineering Research Program, a Harvard-wide interfaculty research initiative. His work has ranged from the climatic impacts of large-scale wind power to an early critique of the prospects for hydrogen fuel. David’s hardware engineering work includes the first interferometer for atoms, a high-accuracy infrared spectrometer for NASA’s ER-2, the development of Carbon Engineering’s air contactor and overall process design, and the development of a stratospheric propelled balloon experiment for solar geoengineering. He teaches science and technology policy, climate science, and solar geoengineering. David is the author of over 200 academic publications with a total citation count of over 13,000. He has written for the public in op-eds and A Case for Climate Engineering.

The animation illustrates Pennsylvania's relatively recent transition from conventional vertical wells (black diamonds) to horizontal wells (red diamonds), drilled mostly in sections of the Marcellus, Utica, and Geneseo/Burket shale formations located in the northeast and southwest portions of the state. The animation also shows that as horizontal drilling increased, the number of vertical wells—which are typically less productive—fell, resulting in an overall decline in the state's new well count. Hey friends and Earth Guardians, it’s really hard to explain what we’re going through here in Western North Carolina.

I’ve lived here my whole life, and the devastation from Hurricane Helene is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s been a whirlwind of emotions—shock, grief, resilience, and maybe a little hope. But things are tough. So many people still don’t have water, power, internet, or even cell service, and every little thing takes way longer than usual. Some of our friends and family are leaving because their basic needs aren’t being met. And hearing that the body count keeps rising—likely into the thousands—makes it all feel so overwhelming.

What’s keeping us afloat right now is the love and support we’re receiving from our community and from people like you.

Please don’t forget about us.

Keep talking about what we’re going through because this disaster is about more than just a storm. It’s connected to climate change, capitalism, and colonization. If humans created these systems, we also have the power to change them. We owe it to the next seven generations to figure out a better way to live—in harmony with the planet and each other.

Wandering Wolf serves as: leader of the National Mayan Council of Elders of Guatemala; Day Keeper of the Mayan Calendar; 13th generation Quiche Mayan Spiritual Leader; a founder and Grand Elder of the Continental Council of Elders & Spiritual Guides of the Americas; Extraordinary Ambassador in the Guatemalan government representing the indigenous pueblos; and an international lecturer on Mayan culture.His mathematical provenance extends to the traditional and elegant mathematics of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, which culminates in the Mayan year “Zero,” or approximately 2012 in the Gregorian calendar.
