As states and the Biden administration begin a push to rapidly electrify the U.S. fleet for climate reasons, policymakers are under increasing pressure to rethink how states and the federal government fund transportation infrastructure and services. For decades, motor fuel taxes have generated the majority of state and federal funds spent on transportation, even if recently these taxes have been losing their purchasing power. However, a shift to electric vehicles will require a new transportation funding model. The speakers will discuss the challenges and opportunities with such options as mileage fees, carbon taxes, higher vehicle registration fees, or a shift entirely away from user-generated revenue. Sequestering carbon in trees and soil is an effective tool in the global fight against climate change, yet farmers face obstacles to entering the carbon market. Based on nearly a decade of work in Haiti, Deborah McGrath discusses how colleges like Sewanee can participate in a win-win strategy for climate justice by investing in small farmers to reduce our carbon footprints. An ecologist and professor of biology, Deborah McGrath loves trees. Her research focuses on managing biogeochemical cycles in wetland and forested ecosystems to address environmental challenges in human-dominated landscapes. Dr. McGrath is the Carl Biehl Professor of International Studies and serves as Assistant Dean for the Environment at the University of the South. Since her days as a Peace Corps volunteer, McGrath has worked with farmers in the global South to integrate trees into farming strategies that maximize the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit. She is grateful for longtime Sewanee Haiti Institute collaborators Pradip Malde, Photographer and Professor of Art, and Dixon Myers, Director of Outreach in the Office of Civic Engagement. Dr. McGrath considers working with farmers and students to be among the biggest privileges of her career because of their enormous potential to protect and restore our environment. Climate change is the biggest crises staring at humanity but our politicial leaders and businesspeople don't pay a heed to it. Ridhima is the one who is challenging the most powerful people to take action. She won't stay quiet because her future as well as future of billions of young children is being spoiled. Watch this powerful talk by Ridhima who is not willing to 'tolerate' inaction. Ridhima is a daring 11-year-old girl who sued the Indian government for not taking serious steps to combat climate change. It was dismissed, but she escalated it to the Supreme Court. That’s a gutsy move by a young climate activist! The Uttarakhand floods of 2013 prompted her to take notice of the disastrous effects of climate change. The death toll in the floods affected Ridhima badly, and made her furious on the apathy of Indian government. She was invited to the United Nations General Assembly at the Climate Action Summit 2019. She joined Greta Thunberg on Sep 20 in her Global Climate Strike at New York. She also spoke at the international XYNETO exchange conference in Norway to spread awareness about climate change. Recently, Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia interacted with her in Rishikesh. Jon Bowermaster discusses his work on the Hudson River Stories project, which explores climate change and other environmental challenges for the Hudson River Valley, the birthplace of the American environmental movement. Writer, filmmaker and adventurer Jon Bowermaster is a six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council. One of the Society’s ‘Ocean Heroes,’ his first assignment for National Geographic Magazine was documenting a 3,741 mile crossing of Antarctica by dogsled. Jon has written eleven books and produced/directed more than thirty documentary films, including Dear President Obama, Antarctica On the Edge, After the Spill and Ghost Fleet. His National Geographic-sponsored Oceans 8 project took him and his teams around the world by sea kayak over the course of ten years (1999-2008), bringing back stories from the Aleutian Islands to French Polynesia, Gabon to Tasmania, and more, reporting on how the planet’s one ocean and its various coastlines are faring in today’s busy world. Jon is the President of the One Ocean Media Foundation, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Adventure Science, a member of Riverkeeper’s Leadership Council and Creative Affiliate of The Safina Center. For the past several years, Jon and his One Ocean Media Foundation / Oceans 8 Films team have focused on a series of short films called the Hudson River Stories, which dives into the risks to, and hopes for the Hudson River Valley, the birthplace of the American environmental movement. Jon is currently a visiting lecturer at Bard College, in the Environment and Urban Studies Department, and has a weekly radio show/podcast called The Green Radio Hour with Jon Bowermaster. Jill Tarter, the astrophysicist who inspired Jodie Foster's character in Carl Sagan's movie Contact, dedicated her career to the search for extraterrestrial life. She is now the Director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California... but it wasn't an easy path. After her scholarship was taken away, she went to the dean of the engineering college and said, "Dean Corson, this isn't fair. I've been on dean's list every semester." And he kindly said, "You know, you're right. It isn't fair. It isn't fair at all." She has no idea what he said when he called up Procter & Gamble, but he got her that scholarship back. 20 years later, when Dean Corson was the president of Cornell, he had an advisory committee and Jill Tarter was on it. She was able to go up to him all those years later and say, "See, President Corson? Thank you for believing in me. I'm on your advisory committee for this fantastic telescope and I have to thank you once again."
