Given the large number of species currently at risk of extinction, Brendan shares a philosophical and practical exploration of the nature of species and through specific examples, offers a new lens- the wonder of nature's irreplaceable designs - through which we can evaluate conservation policies and investments. Brendan received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University at Buffalo, and was a Florence Levy Kay Fellow in Philosophy and Neuroscience at Brandeis University. His research addresses a range of issues at the intersection of science and philosophy. One of his major projects draws on insights from cognitive neuroscience to illuminate philosophical questions about the nature of evaluation and action: How does evaluation translate into action? Why is it that sometimes, we fail to do what we know is right or best? Brendan is also interested in environmental ethics, and some of his recent work addresses ethical questions about the value of species. He teaches courses in ethical theory and applied ethics, helping students think about how philosophical reflection can help inform their responses to the concrete practical challenges they will face in their personal and professional lives. In his early twenties, Bryce Jones witnessed first hand the innovation of deforestation technology, while methods of tree planting remained stagnant. After studying biology and starting a solar consulting company, Bryce wanted a project with maximum impact on the climate crisis. Today, Bryce Jones talks to us about how he founded Flash Forest with the goal of creating a practical and scalable means of accelerating the rate of global reforestation. In his early twenties, Bryce Jones witnessed first hand the innovation of deforestation technology, while methods of tree planting remained stagnant. After studying biology and starting a solar consulting company, Bryce wanted a project with maximum impact on the climate crisis. He founded Flash Forest with the goal of creating a practical and scalable means of accelerating the rate of global reforestation. Flash Forest is Canada’s first drone reforestation company created with the goal to maximize carbon sequestration and restore ecosystems across the planet. Bryce's vision is to plant 1 billion trees by 2028 and not stop there. Bryce is CEO of Flash Forest and resides in Toronto, Ontario.
