Andy Panelli and Jessie Snyder present on how to build confidence and be effective seeking endorsements or statements of support from Catholic institutions, including Colleges, Hospitals and Diocese. It’s easier than you think! Speaker Bios: Jessie Synder is a retired teacher of 32 years from Allentown, PA, attended Bucknell and Lehigh universities. She taught fourth grade students about the topics of global warming and climate change in the 1990’s and continued these studies later with second graders. She learned that children are never too young to care about and act on these critical issues. Joining the CCL Lehigh Valley Branch in 2016, she realized that her contributing strength was writing. Having had some success with college endorsements, Jessie has been focusing on Catholic colleges and universities. She has reached out to community leaders as well. When not engaged in CCL work, she is busy babysitting for her two grandsons. Andy Panelli is on the leadership team of CCL’s Catholic Action Team and is a member of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Encyclical Working Group. Andy also leads a multi-parish Creation Care Team (CCT) in Vicariate V of the Archdiocese. Part of the mission of Andy’s CCT is to provide tools and event ideas to make other CCT’s in the Diocese more effective.

Dr. Bobbi Wegner discusses the need for important conversations with our children, particularly as they relate to implicit gender bias. Gender roles are primarily socially constructed, and we can help shape future thoughts and behavior of a new generation by having an ongoing dialog. Dr. Wegner discusses inappropriate sexual behavior and violence towards women; she advocates changing the cultural dialog and socially constructed gender roles by having difficult conversations with our kids now. It's not just about parenting, it's about leadership argues Dr. Wegner. Dr. Wegner is a clinical psychologist and behavioral medicine specialist. She specializes in stress management, and the importance of maintaining ‘self’ as a parent. She sees individuals and families at Boston Behavioral Medicine, and teaches at Harvard Graduate School of Education in Child Advocacy, Group Counseling, and Cross-Cultural Counseling. A national group of nearly 500 health leaders from across Canada met virtually to hear the perspective of Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, led by members of the National Turtle Lodge Council of Knowledge Keepers, on the issue of racism in health care. He is a researcher, electrical and electronic engineer and from the age of ten he studies biology, chemistry and physics on a daily basis. He has written and published books about how to make your own fuel and how to make your home energy-independent. He has been involved in research about fuel production with the use of renewable energy sources for 30 years. He has already been living in an energy-independent house for 25 years. He works with a group of people on the development of an energy-independent community and has modified his car to run on fuel produced by himself using renewable energy sources. His inventions have attracted the interest of various Greek and foreign organizations. Sustainable fashion expert Kelly Drennan designs a talk about why your own closet hold the answer to helping slow climate change. From buttons to bargains, from rags to returns, those skinny jeans are more than just today's fashion statement. Kelly founded Fashion Takes Action out of her desire to create a better, more sustainable future for her two daughters. Determined to making fashion circular, Kelly convenes the Ontario Textile Diversion Collaborative (OTDC), with more than 30 stakeholders committed to increasing textile diversion, while unlocking local solutions for reuse and recycling. Kelly is also a member of the City of Toronto's Circular Economy Working Group and their Fashion Industry Advisory Panel. Most recently, Kelly has taken on the role of chairing a task force and committee to develop a circular fashion standard for Canada, with the Canadian Standards Association. Kelly also produces the annual WEAR conference, and is a sought after consultant for fashion designers and brands looking to embrace CSR and sustainability. In 2017 Kelly was recognized as a Canadian environmental leader with the esteemed Clean 50 Award for her work in Education & Awareness, and is the first fashion industry recipient. This month, Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration reported a quarter of a million Californians experiencing homelessness requested help in 2020—numbers that skyrocketed from previous estimates in some Bay Area counties. The Golden State is lauded for its job opportunities and diverse population, but it’s also the state with some of the highest housing and transportation costs in the nation. Now, Californians are demanding change, and a cross-sectional group of affordable housing and homelessness advocates created Roadmap Home 2030, a definitive plan to end homelessness and create affordable homes for all over the next 10 years. Housing California, the California Housing Partnership, and dozens of experts and advocates identified 57 policy solutions to create affordable homes, protect low-income renters, end homelessness and ensure racial equity. With their detailed plan of creative solutions, coupled with dedicated leadership, this ambitious group believes a better California is doable. The wealth gap and a shortage of affordable homes in the state prohibits Californians from building healthy and fulfilling lives. With considerable energy and influence, this coalition of housing advocates are seeking to make bold, structural change to create an equitable future where everyone has a safe place to live. Join our expert panel for a conversation about equity, change and the fight to dramatically shift the landscape on affordable housing and homelessness in the Golden State. Engineering has always been about solving problems and adding value to society. However, the problems we are now facing are becoming more complex meaning that engineering needs to evolve. Global challenges such as climate change need a new generation of engineers who can learn to balance the competing needs of society and nature. These engineers will blend creativity, systems thinking and behavioural science to develop solutions which can be accepted by communities around the world, adding value not only to society but also our natural world. We call these people Zero Carbon Engineers and this talk will discuss why we need them and the some of the skills they will need. David Rooney is a Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on energy generation and materials and he is the Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Group at Queen’s and Director of the Bryden Centre, a cross-border renewable research centre. At present he works with oil and gas companies, regional industry and government to advise on Zero Carbon technologies. He is the Dean of Internationalisation and Reputation for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and has a long history of working with international partners including time in China developing the Queen’s College at the China Medical University in Shenyang.
