The world's oceans have seen significant declines in certain types of microscopic plant-life at the base of the marine food chain, according to a new NASA study. The research is the first to look at global, long-term phytoplankton community trends based on a model driven by NASA satellite data.

Peepal Baba or Swami Prem Parivartan is an environmentalist who along with his team has planted over 20 million trees in 202 districts across 18 states in India. He was born to a doctor of the Indian Army on 26 January 1966 in Chandigarh, India. His English teacher inspired him at the age of 11 to plant trees in 1977. He is the founder of Give Me Trees Trust which was later registered as a non-governmental organization in 2011. More than 4 billion tons/year of plant-based crop and forest residues (e.g. biomass) are being burned. Some of this burning contributes to catastrophic wildfires. And yet, almost all these burned residues would otherwise have intrinsic economic values for conversion into fuels or chemicals. In this talk, I explore the apparent paradox between biomass disposal and utilization. I highlight the newest efforts in turning trash into cash, which could make biomass residue conversion more attractive economically, at the same time reducing the environmental and economic damages of biomass burning. Kevin Kung is currently the CTO of a biomass technology start-up Takachar, as well as a Cyclotron Road entrepreneurial fellow collaborating with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He earned his Ph.D. from MIT, focusing on biofuels and renewable energy, and specializes in biomass and energy conversion systems, engineering design in resource-constrained settings, and waste-sector innovation. In 2015, he co-founded Safi Organics, a biochar fertilizer company that has grown to be financially profitable today, serving more than 3,500 farmers. 2020 has been promoted by FAO as the International Year of Plant Health, aiming to "Protect plants to protect life". In this regard, Tito Caffi - researcher at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart - illustrates the main objective of his research activity: to combine agriculture and sustainability, developing tools, techniques and strategies for crop protection. Professor Caffi graduated in Agricultural Science and Technology in 2003 at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and obtained the title of PhD with Doctor Europaeus label at the AgriSystem Doctoral School with the thesis "Epidemiology and modelling of grapevine downy mildew primary infections caused by Plasmopara viticola (Berk et Curt.) Berlese et de Toni ". Since 2003 he has attended the Institute of Entomology and Plant Pathology, with project contracts, scholarships, research grants and then as a PhD student and Post Doctorate Fellow. Since 2015 he is Researcher (lg. 240/10) at DIPROVES, Sustainable Crop Protection area. Technology can play an important role in implementing sustainable agriculture. People usually do not understand the value of water until they are themselves affected. Probable reasons are they either have plenty of water or are not aware about the problem. Drip irrigation is a wonderful agricultural technique wherein water is used just in the required amounts and is delivered precisely to the place required instead of flooding the crop with water. Hydroponics is one other technique where each drop of water is recycled back to the plant along with required nutrients. One can achieve ten times the produce achieved on the same land and with the same amount of water. Also, the plant is stronger hence has better survival chance and better yields. The collaboration of agriculture with technology has numerous widespread applications. The talk is not about low-tech or hi-tech, it is about right-tech. We are not far away from the days where we would see autonomous farms! Sachin is the Founder and CEO of Simply Fresh Private Limited - India's Largest State of The Art Precision Farm. At Simply Fresh, Sachin and his team were successfully able to combine hydroponic soil less farming with AI technology and have developed an AI Platform called ‘Farm in A Box’ (FiAB).
