Dr Lindsay Murray’s talk will highlight examples of the impact of climate change, largely through human activity, on wildlife and, using the experience of the ‘anthropause’ during lockdown as a catalyst, aim to encourage a call to action towards greener, wilder and more respectful ways of co-existing with other species in nature for the shared benefit of all. Dr Lindsay Murray is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Psychology at the University. Her research interests are predominantly in primatology, particularly personality, laterality, social behaviour and self-recognition, but also extend to wider aspects of animal behaviour, including elephant grief and ecotourism involving brown bears. She is on the Council of the Primate Society of Great Britain and the Education Committee of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Sustainable Development Goal 12 is about "responsible consumption and production". Worldwide consumption and production rely on the use of the natural environment and resources in a way that continues to have destructive impacts on the planet. And if we speak honestly, we know that much of this overconsumption drives the global economy and allows businesses to thrive. To solve big problems like climate change, waste, and pollution, we need a big idea. This big idea is the circular economy, rethinking how we design, make, and use the things we need, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear. We teamed up with Luisa Santiago from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, leaders in developing and promoting the idea of a circular economy, to understand how businesses can, or already do, contribute to SDG 12.

The final Project ReDesign workshop took place at the Examination Schools, Oxford on 25 March 2011. During the day students rose to the challenge of re-thinking whether our current waste problem is in fact a materials opportunity, by exploring the possibilities of a systems level re-design in a world of finite resources and rising energy costs.

Volunteers from the Foundation's Founding Partners, B&Q, BT & CISCO, Renault and National Grid were there to support the workshops, as key industry sector experts.

The privatization of water has significantly impacted communities, creating great hardships, especially on women in rural communities. Mary Grace Almandrez shares her perspective on this important issue, expanding upon the trickledown effect that lack of potable water creates. She encourages us to think about climate change through the lens of the people on the ground, and its impact on them in their day-to-day lives. Dr. Almandrez is Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island. She is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and leads the development and sustenance of a vibrant and diverse community of students, staff, and faculty throughout the University. She joined URI from Brown University where she served as an advocate for all students to thrive in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. She supervised Residential Life, Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Student Support Services. She orchestrated several major reorganizations on the divisional and departmental levels. Dr. Almandrez also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team. Prior to serving as associate vice president for Campus Life and dean of students, she was interim assistant vice president for Campus Life, associate dean of the College, and director of the Brown Center for Students of Color.
