While on a trip to the Maldives in 2009, he came up with a solution to the problem of an abundance of sun, but not so much available land. If you have maxed out the available space for photovoltaics on land, why not put photovoltaics on the sea? By developing a marine floating solar system which can provide any required solar capacity to almost any island, an island could switch off their diesel gensets completely during daytime. Martin founded Swimsol in 2012 and worked in cooperation with the Technical University of Vienna to develop SolarSeaTM - the world's first commercial modular marine-grade floating solar system. Today Swimsol has 55 employees and has successfully completed projects in the Maldives, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and are currently expanding into new markets. Winners of the WSIS Prizes, recognizing innovative technological approaches to support sustainable development, were announced on 28 May 2024 at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)+20 Forum High-Level Event 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland. Overall, projects from 18 countries were presented with WSIS Prizes top honours, showcasing leading efforts to bridge the digital divide, foster digital inclusion, and drive socio-economic progress on a global scale. “This year's WSIS Prizes demonstrate the innovation and energy that exist to find technological solutions to some of the globe's biggest challenges," said ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. “These are the creative contributions that the world needs in our effort to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals." GeoTanaman represents a cutting-edge system built on the principles of service-oriented architecture, designed for accessibility through both web and mobile platforms. Its primary function is to acquire, manage, analyze, and present geospatial information related to Malaysia's food crops. The overarching goal of this system is a comprehensive National Crop Inventory Geospatial database characterized by organization, seamlessness, and continuous updates, aligning with the broader vision of Digital Agricultural Transformation. Commencing in 2022, GeoTanaman aims to register all food crop farmers, with farm-related data being regularly updated by farmers on the provided land use map and subsequently verified by the Department of Agriculture (DOA). Leveraging the latest information on crops, planting practices, and market demands, farmers can strategize for future planting activities, engage in market analysis, and identify potential business opportunities. By facilitating the integration of real-time data, the system serves as a catalyst for enhancing farmers' income and reduce reliance on imported foods. GeoTanaman stands as a pivotal tool in fostering a resilient and self-sufficient agricultural landscape. With over 2500+ successful meetings and 5,000+ hours logged, it serves key government offices, universities, and ministries, contributing to Smart Bangladesh vision. The national video conference platform NationalConnect, aslo known as Boithok is a homegrown solution developed by the BNDA Team of BCC to combat the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. It serves as a critical tool for ensuring the continuity of government services, offering secure and affordable remote meeting solutions to government offices, universities, schools, students, and citizens. The platform stands out with its features such as unlimited meeting duration, secured data storage within the national data center, and cost-effective subscriptions for general users. The platform's hosting within the national data center ensures that no data is stored outside of the country. This addresses concerns about security & privacy risk, and data leakage. A significant highlight of the platform is its provision of free subscriptions for schools and universities, easing the burden on educational institutions grappling with remote learning challenges during the pandemic. This initiative underscores the project's commitment to supporting education and enhancing access to digital resources for academic institutions across Bangladesh. Since its inception in January 2021, the NationlConnect has evolved through major revisions, including its latest release in January 2023, which expanded its capacity and functionalities. Despite facing stiff competition from global giants like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, NationalConnect distinguishes itself by prioritizing customization and catering to local needs. With over 2500+ successful meetings and 5,000+ hours logged, it serves key government offices, universities, and ministries, contributing to Smart Bangladesh vision. Despite capacity limitations, it has garnered adoption among select ministries and government agencies, bolstered by workshops, training sessions, and robust communication channels. Its impact transcends crisis management, fostering seamless communication and operational efficiency within Bangladesh's unique social, cultural, and economic milieu. Nowadays, when the world's largest forests are swept by fires and new climate problems are emerging, it is more than necessary to look for unconventional solutions. How can we use artificial intelligence to save the planet? You'll find out from his talk. Martin Spano is computer scientist, futurist, writer and member of an expert team for strategy of artificial intelligence development in Slovakia. His book „The Artificial Intelligence in a Nutshell“, which was also published in Slovak language has become bestseller in the USA. He’s dedicated to scientific enlightenment and his aim is to clarify many times controversial scientific discoveries to the general public in order to avoid their misinterpretation. His opinion is that advanced technology such as artificial intelligence will help solve the burning problems of humanity (global warming, poverty, cancer).
