The average person has a misguided perception of climate change. We are oblivious to the reality of the dire condition our Earth is in. What is even more frightening is the inaction of individuals in power: governments and big corporations. “The need of the hour is not for people to know about the problem, it’s for them to understand the problem.” Mr. Abhiir Bhalla implores that awareness alone is no longer the requirement. We need to take action. He calls for the adoption of simple measures that we as global citizens must take to alleviate our impact on the Earth. Abhiir Bhalla is a dynamic individual. Tired of enduring the high air pollution levels in his hometown Delhi, he began his journey as a young environmentalist making waves around the world. He works as the Director of Operations and Community Engagement at Care for Air, a non-profit organization working on air pollution. He has been named ‘Friend of The Tiger’ by the National Tiger Conservation Authority of India. Recently, he also represented India as one of the five international youth environmentalists chosen from around the world to interact with the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and Sir David Attenborough on BBC World News and BBC World Service. The tourism industry requires huge amount of natural resources and creates a huge environmental footprint. Yet the onus is always on the travel consumer to ‘make better choices’. What does it look like when the hotels step up and commit to taking responsibility for their environmental footprint? This talk explains why the myth that becoming an environmentally responsible hotel is not profit-friendly is totally wrong. Last year was the first year the word ‘overtourism’ made the dictionary. The press has been filled with stories about the pressure on places like Venice, Amsterdam, and Bali, and often it seems hopeless. However, there are clear solutions ready to be implemented and change doesn't have to take years. Sean Nino is a development expert in the fields of energy, water and waste, with over 8 years of experience in consulting and research for various clients in the Indonesian sustainable tourism and environmental property development sector. His passion lies within environmental sustainable systems design and methods, that change and challenge our existing norms. Sean is the co-founder of Eco Mantra, a team of engineers and specialists that collaborate with developers and architects to help them save environmental resources and ultimately drive down costs. He is also one of the main drivers behind the Merah Putih Hijau movement, which builds, operates and transfers community-owned material management facilities to communities around Bali. Sean grew up in Bali and spent 12 years in Germany, before moving back to Bali in 2013 to work on the problems he is passionate about. Amazon Watch recently released The Chevron Tapes, a compilation of clips taken from internal Chevron videos leaked to us by a whistleblower which show company technicians finding and mocking contamination in areas of the Amazon rainforest it claims to have cleaned up years ago. The videos also included revealing interviews with area residents in which they denounce the pollution and recount how Chevron never cleaned up waste pits and instead just covered them with dirt. Many viewers were deeply affected by the clip of a resident named José describing how he lost three daughters due to the oil contamination. ------ Chevron's response to these damning videos is to claim that they "may have been taken out of context." The full videos are available online, but here is still more "context" for Chevron's benefit. José says that he's lived in this area since before there was any oil exploration. He lives near the very first first oil well that Chevron drilled in the area, Dureno Uno. ------ Before Dureno Uno, José's home was a pristine rainforest paradise. Over the next three decades, Chevron spilled millions of gallons of crude, dumped more than 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater directly into rivers and streams, and abandoned hundreds of unlined waste pits filled with poisonous sludge. You don't need to take our word for it. Here is a 2010 interview of a former Dureno Uno oil worker who recalls the helplessness he felt at being ordered by Texaco (now Chevron) to dump toxic waste directly into the rainforest, day after day. ------ Dureno Uno is the oil well that killed José's three daughters and turned his rainforest home into a toxic waste dump. Chevron alone is responsible for this ruthless, premeditated crime. José said in the clip then that he had been waiting for more than 20 years for help, but so far none had arrived. ------ José’s interview was filmed in 2006, so now he has been waiting about 30 years. Shame on Chevron. Don't let Chevron get away with the environmental crime of the century!
