Dr Lindsay Murray’s talk will highlight examples of the impact of climate change, largely through human activity, on wildlife and, using the experience of the ‘anthropause’ during lockdown as a catalyst, aim to encourage a call to action towards greener, wilder and more respectful ways of co-existing with other species in nature for the shared benefit of all. Dr Lindsay Murray is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Psychology at the University. Her research interests are predominantly in primatology, particularly personality, laterality, social behaviour and self-recognition, but also extend to wider aspects of animal behaviour, including elephant grief and ecotourism involving brown bears. She is on the Council of the Primate Society of Great Britain and the Education Committee of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Do we have a right to be hopeful? With political and ecological fires raging all around, is it irresponsible to imagine a future world radically better than our own? A world without prisons? Of beautiful, green public housing? Of buried border walls? Of healed ecosystems? A world where governments fear the people instead of the other way around? 

“A Message From the Future II: The Years of Repair” is an animated short film that dares to dream of a future in which 2020 is a historic turning point, where the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic and global uprisings against racism drive us to build back a better society in which no one is sacrificed and every one is essential.

The film is a sequel to the 2019 Emmy-nominated short film “A Message From the Future” with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and features the art of Molly Crabapple, with the political storytelling of Naomi Klein, Avi Lewis, and Opal Tometi. The cast of narrators from around the world includes Tometi, Emma Thompson, Gael García Bernal, and the Nigerian poet and activist Nnimmo Bassey.

The privatization of water has significantly impacted communities, creating great hardships, especially on women in rural communities. Mary Grace Almandrez shares her perspective on this important issue, expanding upon the trickledown effect that lack of potable water creates. She encourages us to think about climate change through the lens of the people on the ground, and its impact on them in their day-to-day lives. Dr. Almandrez is Associate Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Rhode Island. She is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and leads the development and sustenance of a vibrant and diverse community of students, staff, and faculty throughout the University. She joined URI from Brown University where she served as an advocate for all students to thrive in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. She supervised Residential Life, Student and Employee Accessibility Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Student Support Services. She orchestrated several major reorganizations on the divisional and departmental levels. Dr. Almandrez also chaired Brown’s Threat Assessment Team. Prior to serving as associate vice president for Campus Life and dean of students, she was interim assistant vice president for Campus Life, associate dean of the College, and director of the Brown Center for Students of Color. Employees in low-skill, low-paid and insecure occupations constitute 45% of Britain’s labour market, and it is these workers that are turning their backs on the left in droves. In the 2019 election, Labour lost many seats in former strongholds in the post-industrial north and Midlands, and by contrast, stacked upvotes in London and other major cities. The collapse of the red wall signals a serious fracture in the left’s relationship with the working class. Can a transformation of work itself help the left to re-establish a connection with the communities that founded it? Starting from the assumption that all work should be fulfilling, respected and well-rewarded, Jon Cruddas and Molly Kinder will explore ways to repair our civic life by paying closer attention to the interests and concerns of the working class. Practical interventions such as national colleges for skilled work and worker councils could help restore value to work and rebalance employer-employee relationships. Matt decided to get a Geoscience single-subject teaching credential at UC Irvine, and after several years of teaching Marine Science (chemistry, biology, ecology, and other related topic concerning the world’s oceans) and ROP Environmental Horticulture (career technical education in using plants for beauty, shelter, and food) at Northwood High School (Irvine, CA), he became extremely interested in the connection between the food we eat and the negative impacts of modern agriculture on the health of the oceans (acidification, ocean warming, dead zones, etc.), so he telephoned his old Peace Corps friend Nathan.

In 1999, Matt and Bobbie Brown met Nathan McFall in a small village, Kuma-Dunyo, in Togo, West Africa. They worked with farmers, non- government organizations, and students introducing and implementing environmental awareness and education programs, soil conservation techniques, and animal husbandry.
