The FAO's Rift Valley Fever Early Warning Decision Support Tool (RVF DST) is an innovative online platform. It strengthens early warning and response to Rift Valley fever (RVF), a persistent zoonotic disease in Africa. Built under the One Health framework, the RVF DST enhances real-time monitoring and multi-sectoral collaboration across animal, human, and environmental health.

By combining satellite data, climate trends, and field surveillance, the tool predicts RVF outbreaks up to three months ahead. This early insight allows farmers, veterinarians, and policymakers to take preventive action, protecting livestock, livelihoods, and lives. The RVF DST shifts countries from reactive response to proactive prevention, fostering resilient health systems and long-term One Health preparedness.

“The circular economy is more natural than we think,” states our speaker, a Doctor of Science from UNAM’s Institute of Geophysics and a Master in Volcanology/Geophysics from the University of Würzburg. She has conducted extensive research at international institutions across France, Australia, Germany, and the U.S., and worked as a consultant in Germany on environmental remediation and energy technology.

Currently, she is a Professor-Researcher at Universidad Panamericana, teaching engineering and languages. In southern Angola’s Banda Chibia, drought once forced residents like Rita to walk for water. This struggle has ended. Through a partnership between the Government of Angola, the European Union, and FAO, the Banda Chibia Dam now secures water for agriculture and livelihoods. With over 21 million cubic meters capacity, it irrigates 750 hectares, supporting thousands and enabling climate-smart agriculture and resilience.

Farmer Field Schools taught communities efficient water management and sustainable farming, resulting in green fields, year-round harvests, and improved incomes. Rita now harvests food, not searching for water. This project demonstrates how partnership and innovation transform vulnerability into hope.
