Sustainability is often presented as being complex, expensive, and fraught with difficulty, it is considered the preserve of those who can afford it, and with the means and the ‘know how' to achieve it. Leaving behind those that need it the most. The truth is that becoming sustainable isn’t complex. We can’t pretend it is always easy and that it doesn’t require us all to change our behaviour, but it isn’t as confusing as is often presented. This talk hopes to dispel the myth that becoming sustainable is complex, bring to life the compromises and decisions that we can all make to play our part and demystify and democratise the idea of sustainability. In 2015, looking for a side-project that would keep her on the water, she bought the lease for an oyster farm in Deer Isle, Maine. When she saw the mountain of plastic gear that came with it, the side-project became something else. Today, Deer Isle Oyster Co. is a flourishing family business, a proving ground for plastic-free mariculture gear, a new pier for a working waterfront reliant on one fishery, and a purveyor of some of the best oysters in the world. This is the story of one season on the farm, which also happens to be the story of an old island’s precarious present and potential future.
