When the team first began documenting the families’ lives in 1991, the Neumanns and Stanleys were both struggling to adapt to a new, global economy and the trend towards part-time, lower-wage work. With profound intimacy, the documentary follows the stories of the Stanleys and the Neumanns across six presidential administrations and offers a powerful window into how they and their now-grown children have fared while trying to stay afloat in an economy that has presented challenge after challenge for them. “There are so many people struggling the same way with the cost of everything and not getting enough on your paycheck to cover your monthly expenses,� said Terry Neumann, who was a mom of young kids when the documentary’s producers began filming with her and is now in her early 60s. “It’s like we haven’t come very far.� “I won’t give up,� said Jackie Stanley, who is working as a real estate agent while entering her 70s. “Two American Families: 1991-2024� is a FRONTLINE production with Okapi Productions LLC and Public Affairs Television, Inc. in association with Left/Right Docs. Free data allows anyone to tackle air pollution and climate change. Petabytes of free data exist on the internet, such as satellite data, ground sensor data and climate model data. These are resources which have incredible value in better understanding issues like air pollution and climate change and in helping ordinary citizens devise solutions to these large-scale issues. Find out how you as an individual can make a difference. James Poetzscher is a 17-year-old high school student interested in air pollution and climate change. He has authored four research papers in these areas, two of which are currently in peer-review for prestigious journals. He has mapped the global decline in air pollution on behalf of the European Environmental Bureau James Poetzscher is a 17-year-old high school student interested in air pollution and climate change. In recent years, sharing economy websites like Airbnb and VRBO have allowed homeowners to open their doors to tourists, visitors, traveling nurses, and others. Unlike a hotel setting or even a traditional bed and breakfast, this new hybrid model can allow for some unusual interactions as well as some heartwarming and poignant transactions. Comedian Patti Hope created a shared space on Airbnb and soon found herself hosting motorcycle club members, international marriage seekers, speciality caregivers, and the occasional person between homes. Through it all, Hope found that while each guest was looking for lodging, they also found home in the sharing economy and that they left a part of themselves with her when they departed. Patti Hope grew up in a small town in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. In the 80s, she met a geographer and they married and had many adventures together, traveling and living in the US Virgin Islands and all over the eastern US. Then, in 2009, he died after a five-year struggle with leukemia. She purchased an old farmstead in NJ and poured her grief into its restoration. For eight years the property was host to visual artists, video, film and live music productions, an organic farmer and his family, chickens and entirely too many cats. A passionate advocate for all things social sector, as a nonprofit executive for over 30 years, Patti established best practices for dozens of charities and nurtured the careers of hundreds of young idealists. In 2013, Patti opened her home to travelers using the sharing economy site Airbnb. In 2017, she moved to central Florida and transitioned from a career in nonprofit management to stand-up comedy, speaking, and writing. Wildlife veterinarian Dr. Gabby Wild discusses her latest book, National Geographic Kids’ "Wild Vet Adventures: Saving Animals Around The World". Dr. Wild travels the continents to meet some of Earth's most incredible critters, including regal lions, playful pandas, fearsome Gila monsters, and creepy tarantulas. She teaches young readers about animal anatomy and behaviors, diets, families, the dangers they face in the wild, the special human-animal relationships and the challenges that arise when they share a habitat. Dr. Gabby Wild has traveled the world to save animals. Kids often recognize Dr. Wild as the veterinarian from Animal Jam Classic, where she answers questions from children about wild animals. Some of her noted recent collaborations include World Wildlife Fund, National Geographic Society, Jane Goodall Institute, Harvard University, Oxford University, The American Museum of Natural History, The Bronx Zoo, Zoological Society of London, Natural History Museum (London) , and Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (Paris). We have known about the threats represented by climate change for decades. We called it global warming. Did you know that we release CO2 to our atmosphere by mining and burning fossil fuels? Since the atmosphere is less and less permeable, the greenhouse effect arises and it warms up the atmosphere of Earth. Average yearly temperature is increasing, icebergs are melting, climate is changing. Various ecosystems are collapsing. Despite of protectors´ efforts, society does not realize the seriousness of this situation. Where did we make a mistake? Why did we wake up only now? Contemporary climate activism can bring hope for our planet. We have to find courage and make radical system changes. It is not only about saving the planet anymore, it is about saving human kind. The way young people act has awakened hope. Jakub Hrbáň is one of Slovak coordinators in students´ climate movement “Fridays For Future�. He joined the climate strike in March 2019, after the beginning of preparations for the first Slovak strike within the worldwide students´ climate strike. He finished high school in 2017. He decided that university has to wait and instead he entered a ten-month community program YIP (Youth Initiative Program) in Sweden. He learned about challenges which humanity is facing right now. He worked in a team with the mayor of Bratislava, Matúš Vallo. Now he leads a project called Miznúca Domovina (Disappearing Homeland), through which they try to spread information about climate crisis among the public. What are the impacts of climate change that are felt around the world? How are people responding? And what is the role of today's youth in all of this? Julia Blocher, researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and President of the International Youth Federation (IYF), breaks all of it down for us. She illustrates several concrete events which are causing people to migrate and leave their homes, but also highlighting to the stories of several young people that are making real change. Striving for a future which is just, peaceful and inclusive is not impossibile with this new generation of leaders. Julia Blocher is a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and President of the International Youth Federation (IYF). She has worked for a decade on the interaction between climate change and the many factors that influence the movement of people and communities. She believes that there are two main development issues facing the global community for which youth lead the way in providing solutions: climate change and migration. In her work as a doctoral researcher at PIK and as an Associate Member of the Hugo Observatory (Belgium), her studies focus on environment, climate change, and migration linkages in the East and Horn of Africa and in island nations. Prior to joining PIK, Ms. Blocher was a Project Manager at the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research in New York (UNU-CPR), a think tank within the UN system. We're currently facing a global food crisis. Traditional meat production causes dangerous effects on our environment that threaten the future of humanity, but we aren't going to stop eating meat anytime soon. In this electrifying talk, Kimberly Liang dives into the science behind lab-grown meat and calls for radical transformation to our food systems. On a global scale, cellular agriculture will allow us to dramatically reduce the effects of agriculture on climate change without forcing people to change their diets -- we can still have our steak and eat it too. Kimberly Liang is a young innovator who is radically transforming the agriculture industry with her unconventional ideas. She has built projects related to improving the taste and texture of cultured meat, and is currently performing scaffolding research that has the potential of reducing the need for livestock farming. Kimberly is an aspiring entrepreneur, who is interested in bringing her ideas into fruition through business ventures. She has developed strategies for UN Women to increase digital literacy in India, won national case competitions, and had her recommendations implemented by multiple multi-million dollar companies. She has spoken at multiple global stages about environmental sustainability and pleads the younger generation to take action on global issues. She is obsessed with leaving a positive impact on humanity and is solving the world’s hardest problems - one cell at a time.
