Hunter and Thomas showcase the outdoor concert series "In a Landscape" with stunning visuals that feature Oregon industry, history and culture. Hunter brings a 9-foot Steinway grand piano to the middle of forests, fields, calderas and historical sites for classical music concerts. To meet the acoustical challenges of performing in the wild, music is transmitted to the concert-goers via wireless headphones. No longer confined to seats, guests can explore the landscape, wander through secret glens, lie in sunny meadows, and roam old growth forests. Hunter is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist who integrates literature, visual art, dance, theater, and design to transform the art of performance. His recent work “In a Landscape” connects classical music in the wild to communities all over our state. We invite you to step into Hunter’s world and explore for yourself a blend of the refined outdoors. After first moving to Portland in 1982, Thomas led an active life in politics before finding his true identity in music. With the formation of his “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994, Thomas embraced the global music community as inspiration for his work. His dazzling energy and selflessness are a reflection of this city and what we should all aspire to be — a connected community. Rose, as they discuss the failings of modern capitalism and how businesses imbued with a sense of purpose can help create more sustainable, ethical economies powered by motivated and dignified personnel. Henderson observes that capitalism is the most successful economic system in history, and yet it’s in danger of destroying itself - and our world. Purpose can help. Cutting-edge research has found that firms that view profits as a means to an end, rather than as an end it itself – and who view their mission as the creation of social value – are often significantly more productive and creative than more conventional firms. They can also be powerful allies in driving the social and political change that is needed if we are to address the great problems of our time. This interactive online event is part of a continuing series in the Garrison Institute’s Forum on Pathways to Planetary Health (PPH).
