Advancements in ocean technology will soon enable vast observation of the ocean's 'twilight zone.' Melissa Omand, an Assistant Professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, plans to deploy hundreds of tiny glass robots as deep-ocean sentinels. These robots will track the vertical transport and sequestration of carbon from the surface to the deep sea, focusing on the 'biological pump' and the fate of carbon from biological sources like phytoplankton.
