Climate change is a serious game, yet tough rules on emissions and saving the planet get broken more and more. Jos explains how we can utilize the ‘game theory’ mechanism as an incentive for us to obey the rules. With a Master’s degree in Law, Jos is a Carbon Specialist at the Climate Neutral Group in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He is helping firms lower their impact on the climate by using the carbon market. He has unique expertise in carbon pricing and in linking tradable commodities with transparency and climate policy. Jos will elucidate how ‘game theory’ can help shape climate change policy! For nearly half her life, Heidi Kritz has been working to protect Alaska’s Bristol Bay from the Pebble Mine project. The proposed copper and gold mining project threatens the bay, which is the largest salmon fishery in the world and is critical to the local economy, ecological stability, and native peoples way of life. Kritz and her community have fought tirelessly against the project both within Alaska and the Lower 48 states. She has helped organize rallies, worked on a massive letter writing campaign against the mine project that ultimately gathered more than 6,000 voices, and has helped mobilize a new generation of regional activists by working with high school students in tribal schools. Kritz’s leadership has added momentum to a decade-long fight to protect the Bristol Bay watershed, and she plans keep up the fight to defend the land and her home.

Here’s some ideas and resources for you regarding messaging, activities, educational events and promotion that have worked to engage parishioners! Speaker Bios: Andy Panelli is on the leadership team of CCL’s Catholic Action Team and is a member of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Encyclical Working Group. Andy also leads a multi-parish Creation Care Team (CCT) in Vicariate V of the Archdiocese. Part of the mission of Andy’s CCT is to provide tools and event ideas to make other CCT’s in the Diocese more effective. Steve Coleman is a retired engineer and businessman. He has been involved with CCL and Catholic outreach for 6 years. Steve has given presentations, help start a care for creation group in is church and written a booklet to lead Catholics from our moral call to care for creation to supporting the Energy Innovation Act. We could use bio waste instead of mineral oil to produce plastic. Is this a modern fairy tale or already a reality? In her TEDx Talk, Andrea explains how we are already able to produce plastic from sources like chicory roots or grass and shares her vision & concepts for on-farm biorefineries that help to recycle nutrients in a sustainable way. Andrea Kruse studied chemistry at the University of Heidelberg and after having received her Ph.D. at the University of Heidelberg and the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (KIT today), she became junior group leader and later group leader in Karlsruhe. For her habilitation at the University of Darmstadt, Andrea focused on new concepts for the production of hydrogen from carbohydrates, one of the major components of biomass. Since 2012, Andrea is a professor for conversion technologies of bio-based resources at the University Hohenheim and has, among other research focuses, great interest in the conversion of biomass into basic chemicals and energy carriers. Besides her research efforts and lectures, Andrea is board member of a variety of committees and institutes as e.g. the Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) in Leipzig.
