Artisanal fishery is a cultural and economic activity for coastal communities in Abandze, east of Cape Coast, Ghana. But standard of living is fast depreciating as fishing revenues have declined over the past years due to sea pollution, climate change and heavy competition for sea resources. Based at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, the Africa Center of Excellence on Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) is training the next generation of scientists and researchers to educate communities, impact policies, and help countries manage their coastal and marine resources to spur economic growth and reduce poverty while adapting to climate change. Returning to open this year’s conference, one of the leading figures in the East Bay Indigenous community and a longtime activist for First People’s rights and the protection of land and waters globally, Corrina Gould, will focus on the concept and practice of “Rematriation,” which involves reclaiming traditional land and sacred sites to help rebuild traditional cultures and heal the deep wounds inflicted by colonization and genocide and also prioritizes the unique role women play in that enormous undertaking.

Corrina Gould, born and raised in the village of Huichin (now known as Oakland CA), is the Tribal Chair for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan Nation and co-founded and is the Lead Organizer for Indian People Organizing for Change, a small Native-run organization; as well as of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust, an urban Indigenous women-led organization within her ancestral territory. Through the practices of “rematriation,” cultural revitalization and land restoration, the Land Trust calls on Native and non-Native peoples to heal and transform legacies of colonization and genocide and to do the work our ancestors and future generations are calling us to do.

Erin Matariki Carr is from the Maori tribal nations and lives in Taneatua in the east of the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand. Matariki is a member of RIVER and a lawyer working within the intergenerational movement of Maori resistance that is now surging towards constitutional transformation in honor of the treaty Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840 between the British Crown and sovereign hapori. An important story in this movement has been the granting of legal personality to Te Urewera rainforest, the homelands of Ng�i TÅ«hoe. Here, Tahoe aims to “disrupt the false notion of human superiority over the land” by removing human ownership and management, and providing a new kawa (or law) that starts with “human management for the benefit of the land”.

Erin Matariki Carr previously worked as Manager of Planning & Design to create and implement policies under the world-first legislation conferring legal personhood to the Te Urewera rainforest. Matariki is currently a project lead at RIVER, where she focuses on the constitutional transformation movement in Aotearoa with a number of other teams, including TÅ«manako Consultants and Te Kuaka NZA.
