Alice Maggio, an advocate for place-based currencies and local economies, uses an apple tree metaphor to describe the factors essential for a healthy, sustainable economy. Her work focuses on educating communities about the role of local financial tools in fostering vibrant, just, and sustainable economies.

From 2012-2017, Alice served as Director of Programs and Executive Director of BerkShares, the Berkshire region’s local currency, at the Schumacher Center for a New Economics. She has been interviewed by PBS NewsHour and the History Channel, and represented her work at international conferences.

The film reveals how historical trauma, stemming from first contact with Europeans, contributes to disproportionately high health and social issues among Indigenous populations. It features cross-generational perspectives from Native people, researchers, and politicians, highlighting the unique challenges resilient communities continue to face.

He has held significant roles, including past-president of the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada and is currently the Director of the Division of Aboriginal Peoples' Health at UBC.
