Ed Boyer is Chairman and Director of Environmental Studies and Sustainability Programs at Prescott College in Arizona where he has been a member of the faculty for the past 30 years. Dr. Boyer was the founding director of the college’s field station in Kino Bay, Sonora, Mexico on the Gulf of California, developing a marine studies curriculum, teaching marine biology, and building programs and infrastructure at the field station. He holds degrees from the University of Arizona (Ph.D., 1987, and Masters, 1980, in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), Arizona State University (B.S. in Zoology, 1978), and UCLA (A.S. in Engineering, 1975). His research interests have included the study of the complexity and stability of ecological communities and the factors that impact species diversity; marine mammals, particularly the Gulf of California Vaquita; Intertidal Ecology; and Invertebrate Zoology. Over the past 40 years, he has lead hundreds of field courses and expeditions in the USA and the Gulf of California, Mexico, and Baja California, ranging from weekend field trips to three month long intensive immersive field courses.

Mylène has golden hands and good head on her shoulders : at 27 years old only, she sets up a clothing line designed without any fabric offcut : 100% zero waste. One of the first designer in France involved in this way. According to usual dressmaking codes, she breaks with fashions conventions, especially when aesthetics takes priority over ethical. From her workshop in Bordeaux, Mylène L’orgilloux demonstrates it’s always possible to do fashion differently. As a pattern maker specialized in CAD systems (Computer Aided Design) Mylène L'Orguilloux initiated the R&D project MILAN AV-JC, to explore Zero Waste Design philosophy. Tired of being asked to follow environmentally absurd industrial design rules, she now explores new design techniques to create zero waste clothing patterns. Being able to see the "zero waste" constraint as a source of creativity is, according to her, a sustainable and innovative answer to the environmental disaster caused by the "world's second most polluting industry"...the fashion industry. Garment creation, is not only about fashion designers' skills, it's also about pattern makers', pattern graders', pattern cutters'.. even though we often forget them. This R&D project brings them all together at the same level, in order to recreate a multidisciplinary discussion and make conscious design decisions. After a 10 year long journey in textile, this project has a unique objective: Initiating a meaningful change in conventional fashion design & static pattern making practices. MILAN AV-JC also supports initiatives which fight against ethical & ecological fashion drifts By the way...our power as consumers is nothing other than a political power. Never underestimate it ! The Pitchfork Ranch is more than another dusty homestead tucked away in a corner of the Southwest. It is a place with a story to tell about the most pressing crisis to confront humankind. It is a place where one couple is working every day to right decades of wrongs. It is a place of inspiration and promise. It is an invitation to join the struggle for a better planet. In this Speaker Series talk, A. Thomas Cole will tell the story of a decades-long habitat restoration project in southwestern New Mexico. Cole will share the past and present history of a very special ranch south of Silver City, which is home to a rare ciénaga wetland, a fragile desert grassland ecosystem, archaeological sites, and a critical wildlife corridor in a drought-stricken landscape. Today, after 21 years of restoration work by Cole and his wife Lucinda, the 11,300 acres that make up the Pitchfork Ranch provide an important setting for carbon sequestration, wildlife habitats, and the reintroduction of endangered or threatened species. Restoring the Pitchfork Ranch weaves together stories of mine strikers, cattle ranching, and the climate crisis into an important and inspiring call to action. Many products are currently based on a ‘short lifecycle’, where plastic as the cheapest material is maintained as the principal element of the success formula. Harmen’s drive is to change this short cycle thinking, and change it into a model in which plastic is held in reserve as a high quality technical material and certainly not for single use products. A transition to alternative materials is key here. He is also on a worldwide search for the best technical solutions for the environmental problems that plastics create. We need common sense to manage our use of plastics. In daily life, we all use them in increasing amounts and see the effects of it in our environment also increasing. The worldwide production of plastics has grown since the 1950’s to an incredible 311 million tons in 2015. Plastic waste is permanent and very complex to handle. For many years, plastic waste was exported to China for recycling purposes. On a global scale, that only resulted in 9% recycling. There are over 5000 types of plastics. And although technically they are all recyclable, economically and practically they are all different, with their own specifications. In practice, 95% now sinks to the bottom of the ocean. How did plastics conquer the worldwide market and how deep are plastics embedded in society? More importantly: which criteria guide our choices in the use of materials and what are the environmental and health effects in the long run? Join host Jeff Corwin as he connects with some of the most threatened and endangered animals that live underwater. First, Jeff helps conservationists save one of Florida’s most iconic species: the gentle manatee. Later, Jeff comes face to face with a Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle - the most endangered sea turtle species on Earth. Finally, Jeff learns about endangered coral reefs and how biologists are racing to save them before it's too late. Video Transcript: Jeff Corwin: Our quest to connect with imperiled aquatic creatures begins on the pristine waters of the Silver River. Jeff Corwin: Just look how clean the water is here. We can see, in some cases, right to the bottom 20 plus  feet deep. We can see the various fish species milling about, big river turtles and large mouth bass, all of them sharing this vital habitat. Jeff Corwin: I'm here with Liz Neville from Defenders of Wildlife. Their mission is to help protect Florida's wetland wilderness. Jeff Corwin: This is old wild Florida, isn't it? Liz Neville: It is, Jeff. This to me is the reason to come to Florida. It's beautiful. The peace that I feel from being out here is unlike anything else. Jeff Corwin:  The Silver River flows into the mighty Ocklawaha River at the heart of the great Florida Riverway. This vast 217 mile system of rivers and springs flows north from central Florida to the Atlantic Ocean, and it's habitat for countless species, including manatees. Jeff Corwin: Manatees are typically 10 feet long and weighing upwards to a thousand pounds plus. They're curious, slow moving and spend much of their day grazing on sea grass. The greatest long term threat to manatee survival is the loss of warm water habitat. So restoring areas of natural warm water habitat will ensure that manatees will thrive into the future. Jeff Corwin: The beauty about Silver River is that it has a relatively constant temperature. So when we get those very dangerous cold snaps, which happen, here in Florida in winter, manatees can come here and survive. Jeff Corwin: Unfortunately, many manatees are cut off from places like Silver River due to manmade barriers. The Kirkpatrick Dam is a good example. It was built in the 1960s and has obstructed  the large scale migration of manatees ever since. Jeff Corwin: Restoring a free flowing Ocklawaha River will not only give manatees better access to Silver River and Silver Springs, but will also provide them with essential warm water winter habitat in many of Ocklawaha's 20 fresh water springs, which are currently not accessible due to high water levels from the dam. Jeff Corwin: The reality is there are decisions that happened decades ago that are impacting the  environmental integrity of Florida today. Liz Neville: Jeff, it's really about coexistence at the end of the day. So much of the appeal of living in Florida is the beautiful natural environment and the wildlife that we have, so the key to continuing the survival of species and also ensuring a good human quality of life is to work with nature and not against her. Jeff Corwin: The challenges that face Florida's coastline, wetlands, and waterways are a microcosm for our entire planet. Oceans provide us with an abundance of food and oxygen. They're great engines that regulate our climate and remove greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Wetlands act as giant filters that store and clean water. They're also a natural barrier that protect us from winds and tidal forces and provide incredible beauty, and of course, habitat for wildlife. But the watery worlds of our planet are under constant threat and many species, like Florida's iconic manatees, are struggling to survive. Jeff Corwin: In recent years, Florida waterways have seen a dramatic increase in harmful algae blooms. These algae blooms are killing other native vegetation that provide food to manatees and other species. Tragically today, more manatees are dying than any other time in Florida's recorded history. Conservationists are racing to save this keystone species before it's too late. Jeff Corwin: To help respond to the recent increase in manatee disease and mortalities, the US Fish  and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are coordinating a statewide manatee rescue and rehabilitation partnership. One of these partner is the SeaWorld manatee rescue team in Orlando. They recently rehabilitated their 19th manatee this  year, a sick and emaciated female named Avana. Jeff Corwin: Over the last four months, Avana has been recovering nicely. This morning she was transferred to a temporary pool to prepare her for her incredible release back into the wild. Jeff Corwin: Four months ago, she was on death's door. She was emaciated, couldn't even swim. A village came together and rescued her. Today, she goes back to the wild where she belongs... We've hit our character limit. This one event launched her into the world of extreme climate change activism. She is now a member of the climate protest group, Extinction Rebellion. She talks about her dramatic transformation and the strength she has found being in community with fellow climate activists. Artist Shane Petzer in Barrydale, South Africa talks about turning trash into art. Through the Magpie Art Collective, he and fellow artists create breathtakingly beautiful chandeliers all made from trash. Two of these hung in the White House in the Obama’s private quarters. During this time of Coronavirus lockdown, Magpie Art Collective have partnered with the Quakers in the Western Cape to create #QuakerPeaceDoves. Find out about how you can take part in the collective remotely and turn your trash into art. And in the USA we feature Solomon Goldstein-Rose. In 2017 at the age 22 Solomon was elected to Massachusetts legislature. After a two year term, he decided he would not run again. Instead he has been ramping up his efforts to get us thinking and acting about climate change. In March just as the Covid-19 Global Pandemic shut everything down, Solomon published his first book: The 100% Solution. A Plan for Solving Climate Change. The book is filled with whimsical and technically accurate illustrations by visual artist and writer, Violet Kitchen. She tells us about the role art can play in change movements.

Undammed follows her journey to free the Klamath, from testifying before Congress to passing down fishing traditions within her young family.
