 Dr. Bullard is an award-winning author of eighteen books that address sustainable development, environmental racism, urban land use, industrial facility siting, community reinvestment, housing, transportation, climate justice, disasters, emergency response, and community resilience, smart growth, and regional equity. He is co-founder of the HBCU Climate Change Consortium. His book, Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class and Environmental Quality (Westview Press, 2000), is a standard text in the environmental justice field. He is the former Dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University and is currently Distinguished Professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy and Director of the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice.

Dr. Bullard was the scheduled honorand and speaker for the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences’ commencement exercises of 2022, but was unable to attend in person. He was awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in absentia, and his graduate address was read for him, to great acclaim, by Professor Foster. The Graduate School was delighted to join with the Earth Commons to welcome him to campus on April 26th, 2023.

Maike Sippel is Professor of Sustainable Economics at the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz, Germany. Thinking about a major task of our generation – shape changes toward a climate-friendly society – she works on projects at the interface between knowledge and social reality. However, Sippel is more than a scientist. Throughout her career, she has been actively engaged in consulting and initiatives to make sure our beautiful planet is preserved for future generations. Professor Connel Fullenkamp discusses the organization Blue Green Future, where his work centers around creating a new economic paradigm that acknowledges our economy depends on nature and embeds ecology into our economic choices. Connel Fullenkamp is Professor of the Practice and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Economics Department at Duke University. Prior to joining the Duke faculty in 1999, Connel was a professor in the Finance Department of the College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. He has published articles on financial market development and regulation, the economic and policy implications of risk sharing, and the macroeconomic impacts of immigrant remittances. Recent publications include “Toward a Nature-Based Economy” in Frontiers in Climate Change and “Financing Conservation by Valuing Carbon Services Produced by Wild Animals” in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. His op-eds have appeared in Newsweek and The New York Times. Connel has been a Visiting Scholar and Short-Term Expert for the International Monetary Fund’s Institute for Capacity Development since 1999, which consists of training government officials around the world. He is a member of the Institute’s finance team, which trains central bankers and other officials in financial market development, inclusion, and regulation. He is also an educational consultant to The New York Times. Originally from Sioux Falls, SD, Connel was named a Presidential Scholar by the U.S. Department of Education in 1983. He then earned his BA in Economics from Michigan State University, which named him one of its Alumni Distinguished Scholars. In 1985, he was named a Truman Scholar. He earned his MA and PhD degrees in Economics at Harvard University, where he was also awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship. Moderated by Kaavya Kasturirangan.

Living in the comforts of modern civilization, most of us are far removed from the natural world and take for granted its existence. But biologist Indriķis Krams, who spends most of his time studying birds in old growth forests, has forged a deeper understanding of and connection to nature. The importance of the biological ecosystems around us are often hard to realise until they are gone, and there are far reaching implications for the loss of biodiversity. And just like humans have influenced the natural world and the creatures inhabiting tit for millennia, Indriķis argues that it’s time for people themselves to change and develop compassion for the natural environment around them in order to save it from being destroyed. Indriķis Krams is a biologist, professor at the University of Tartu, researcher at Daugavpils University and associate professor at the University of Latvia. He deals with the evolution of cooperation, molecular ecology, behavioral ecology, evolutionary medical science, biological conservation and physiology of birds, insects and humans. He was a grant recipient of the Fulbright Program from the US Department of State and has carried out research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Harvard University. Throughout his career, Indriķis has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
