For every five breaths you take, one is paying for your brain, one is paying for your liver, and another is paying for your muscles.  On average, your body spends about 1,400 calories per day just keeping you alive, even if you're doing nothing else. This helps explain why we tend to avoid unnecessary physical activity.  For our ancestors, finding food could be incredibly difficult, so they didn't waste energy. Today, even though have energy sources ready at our fingertips, we still naturally protect how we spend that energy. In her personal story on how she not only challenged herself but also others, Maike Sippel lies out key questions everyone has to consider when taking action. She reports how her research provides the equipment to becoming a powerful change-agent for a save and vital future. Maike Sippel is Professor of Sustainable Economics at the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz, Germany. Thinking about a major task of our generation – shape changes toward a climate-friendly society – she works on projects at the interface between knowledge and social reality. However, Sippel is more than a scientist. Throughout her career, she has been actively engaged in consulting and initiatives to make sure our beautiful planet is preserved for future generations. She is convinced the transition towards a climate friendly society is the challenge of our lifetime. Her passion lies in projects at the interface between knowledge and social reality and in creating space for transition initiatives to develop. Her academic career led her from studies of architecture (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT), to a PhD in economics (University of Flensburg and Hamburg Institute of International Economics) and consulting and Post-Doc activities (among others at the Institute of Energy Economics and Rational Energy Use at the University of Stuttgart). She was appointed professor in Konstanz in 2013. Sippel started to work on sustainability issues during her studies. She has since contributed to sustainablity projects and research - from the personal and local level to the global. Professor Connel Fullenkamp discusses the organization Blue Green Future, where his work centers around creating a new economic paradigm that acknowledges our economy depends on nature and embeds ecology into our economic choices. Connel Fullenkamp is Professor of the Practice and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Economics Department at Duke University. Prior to joining the Duke faculty in 1999, Connel was a professor in the Finance Department of the College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. He has published articles on financial market development and regulation, the economic and policy implications of risk sharing, and the macroeconomic impacts of immigrant remittances. Recent publications include “Toward a Nature-Based Economy” in Frontiers in Climate Change and “Financing Conservation by Valuing Carbon Services Produced by Wild Animals” in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. His op-eds have appeared in Newsweek and The New York Times. Connel has been a Visiting Scholar and Short-Term Expert for the International Monetary Fund’s Institute for Capacity Development since 1999, which consists of training government officials around the world. He is a member of the Institute’s finance team, which trains central bankers and other officials in financial market development, inclusion, and regulation. He is also an educational consultant to The New York Times. Originally from Sioux Falls, SD, Connel was named a Presidential Scholar by the U.S. Department of Education in 1983. He then earned his BA in Economics from Michigan State University, which named him one of its Alumni Distinguished Scholars. In 1985, he was named a Truman Scholar. He earned his MA and PhD degrees in Economics at Harvard University, where he was also awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship. Moderated by Kaavya Kasturirangan.

Living in the comforts of modern civilization, most of us are far removed from the natural world and take for granted its existence. But biologist Indriķis Krams, who spends most of his time studying birds in old growth forests, has forged a deeper understanding of and connection to nature. The importance of the biological ecosystems around us are often hard to realise until they are gone, and there are far reaching implications for the loss of biodiversity. And just like humans have influenced the natural world and the creatures inhabiting tit for millennia, Indriķis argues that it’s time for people themselves to change and develop compassion for the natural environment around them in order to save it from being destroyed. Indriķis Krams is a biologist, professor at the University of Tartu, researcher at Daugavpils University and associate professor at the University of Latvia. He deals with the evolution of cooperation, molecular ecology, behavioral ecology, evolutionary medical science, biological conservation and physiology of birds, insects and humans. He was a grant recipient of the Fulbright Program from the US Department of State and has carried out research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Harvard University. Throughout his career, Indriķis has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific articles. Chukwumerije's passionate talk warns of an impending crisis as a result of inaction on our part in responding to the climate change but also highlights the opportunities presented to us as we become environmentally conscious as a country. Chukwumerije Okereke is a Professor of Environment and Development at the University of Reading where he also serves as the Co-Director of Climate and Justice Centre and the Leverhulme Climate Justice Doctoral Scholarship Programme Previously, he was a Senior Research Associate at Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia, UK, and Head of Climate and the Environment Development Centre at the Smith School Enterprise, University of Oxford, respectively. He remains a visiting fellow at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute (ECI) Professor Okereke’s work is devoted to understanding the mix of policies, strategies, and institutional arrangements that can help to address climate change and natural resource degradation in Africa in the context of sustainable development and Africa’s structural economic transformation.
