Arunabha Ghosh, Chief Executive Officer of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, participated in a panel discussion. The research and potential use of marine climate-altering techniques are being discussed in the context of the Paris agreement and the ocean’s role in achieving it. None of these techniques are ready at scale. All pose significant technological and governance challenges, which need to be addressed and require the attention of stakeholders. It's no surprise that she brought up carbon pricing because she's been a proponent of this solution for years. "I will look to appoint someone at a very senior level to lead our efforts and to create a hub within Treasury where we particularly focus on financial systems related risk and tax policy incentives towards climate change." Olivia Oguadinma in Nigeria discusses the role of storytelling in motivating her peers to meaningful action. Through her Gems on Earth podcast she reaches young people throughout Western Africa and beyond. Doerte Wihan, a mother of five and a kindergarten teacher in Berlin, Germany, had not given climate change much of a thought. Then she attended a student climate strike with one of her children. This one event launched her into the world of extreme climate change activism. She is now a member of the climate protest group, Extinction Rebellion. She talks about her dramatic transformation and the strength she has found being in community with fellow climate activists. Artist Shane Petzer in Barrydale, South Africa talks about turning trash into art. Through the Magpie Art Collective, he and fellow artists create breathtakingly beautiful chandeliers all made from trash. Two of these hung in the White House in the Obama’s private quarters. During this time of Coronavirus lockdown, Magpie Art Collective have partnered with the Quakers in the Western Cape to create #QuakerPeaceDoves. Find out about how you can take part in the collective remotely and turn your trash into art. And in the USA we feature Solomon Goldstein-Rose. In 2017 at the age 22 Solomon was elected to Massachusetts legislature. After a two year term, he decided he would not run again. Instead he has been ramping up his efforts to get us thinking and acting about climate change. In March just as the Covid-19 Global Pandemic shut everything down, Solomon published his first book: The 100% Solution. A Plan for Solving Climate Change. The book is filled with whimsical and technically accurate illustrations by visual artist and writer, Violet Kitchen. She tells us about the role art can play in change movements.

Founding Director of JCU's Institute of Future and Innovation Studies, Francesco Lapenta describes the complex dichotomy of historical socio-economic progress driven by energy consumption, and shortsighted technological innovation. Francesco argues that a long-term solution to the climate crises can be found only through collaborative governance, and socially responsible innovation processes in the energy sector. The countries that have received the greatest advantages, and pollute the most, bear the responsibility to lead the development of scalable and sustainable alternative energy solutions. They also bear the responsibility to offer equal opportunities, via economically viable alternatives, to developing countries that legitimately aspire to invest in the same transformative social processes, and economic growth models, previously adopted by other countries. ... In the conclusion of the talk, recorded as part of a series of talks on the role of universities in tackling climate change, Francesco states that the role of universities and educators is to create leaders and change makers that understand the complexities, and necessarily shared responsibility, of governing the future of humanity and the planet. The ability to project, organize and foster this transformation through several decades is one of the fundamental functions of the leaders of tomorrow. ...
