World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) focuses this year on “Empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies.” Taking place on 17 May 2023, on the Day ITU calls on the public and private sectors to make pledges for universal connectivity and digital transformation in these countries through its Partner2Connect Digital Coalition. Mid-way through the agenda to fulfil the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, those countries face daunting challenges. he Fifth Conference on the Least Developed Countries(LDC5) in Doha, Qatar, has set out an ambitious new United Nations programme of action to deliver on sustainable development for all by 2030. LDCs are the world’s greatest untapped resource, whose needs must be addressed to achieve the SDGs. About one third of the 2.7 billion people who remain unconnected to the Internet are in the 46 LDCs. Investment in these young, vibrant countries can drive sustainable growth for generations. Together, let’s make 2023 a year of progress for digital transformation in the least developed countries. WTISD has been celebrated annually every 17 May since 1969. It marks the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and founding of ITU in 1865. Investment in these young, vibrant countries can drive sustainable growth for generations.

Ever wondered who will be the hero who saves our environment? In this talk, Manush raises awareness on the environmental issues present in her small city of Dilijan, discusses the initiatives she has taken as an environmental activist throughout her life to involve various parties to solve those issues and her discovery of the key to creating environmentally friendly practices. The president and founder of “Contribution to Women and Children” NGO (established in 2004), and a teacher in one of the schools of Dilijan, Manush Hovnanyan believes there are currently more opportunities in Armenia to enter politics, given that there are many women already in the field who are blazing a trail for others. In particular, Manush is interested in enabling the democratization process in Armenia, and as a politically experienced individual, who empowers young women in her region, she wants to be more engaged in political processes. Most events she organizes are dedicated to the empowerment of young women, their active involvement in politics, as well as to raising awareness about local environmental issues. Manush is also a proud member of the KATARINE Women’s Political Leadership program, where she actively participates and shares her concerns on various issues particularly related to women’s participation and eco-education. Modern slavery is a new concept for many people. In this thought provoking talk Ishaan discusses the link between modern slavery and climate change and what you can do to make a change. Ishaan Shah is a 17-year-old award winning human rights activist from the UK. In 2016, he founded Stolen Dreams, an anti-slavery organisation that acts as a bridge between young people and some of the greatest human rights issues of our time. As an intersectional activist, Ishaan also addresses a number of other global issues including gender inequality, climate change, LGBTQI+ rights, poverty, access to education; all based around the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Ishaan has spread his message widely through social media, television, articles, blogs, podcasts, public speaking and teaching lessons at schools. By working with young people, politicians and business professionals, Ishaan is taking action to ensure that every human being has access to basic human rights.
