This talk was shown live at TEDxEuropeanSustainabilityAcademy, Crete online event, 17.10.2020 Theme: ‘Making sense of climate change on Crete: Taking Action’ Prof. Phoebe Koundouri talks about the Sustainability Transition in Greece in the context of sustainable recovery post the 2020 covid19 virus pandemic. Whilst the world is focussed on the pandemic, Prof. Koundouri reminds us to pay attention to the ‘mother of all crisis’, the climate crisis. She describes the urgent need to decarbonise national energy plans and presents technological pathways to enable decarbonisation. With the aim of ‘leaving no one behind’, job space green recovery, sustainable and inclusive economies, she emphasizes the need for up-skilling and reskilling the labour force to keep up with the 4th industrial revolution towards sustainability. Looking specifically at the role of ESG reporting and green finance lead innovation, she explains the importance of the EU taxonomy and the creation of clusters on sustainability transition. https://www.aueb.gr/en/faculty_page/koundouri-phoebe Professor Koundouri holds a PhD and MPhil in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Cambridge (UK). She is Chair of Sustainable Development at the School of Economics, Athens University of Economics (AUEB) and Business & President of the European Association of Environmental &Natural Resource Economists. She is listed in the 1% of most-cited women economists in the world, with 15 published books and more than 250 published scientific papers. Prof. Phoebe Koundouri is also the Founder and Scientific Director of the Research laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability at AUEB and an affiliated Professor at the ATHENA Research and Innovation Center where she directs EIT Climate-KIC Hub Greece. She is also the co-chair of the UN Sustainable Development Network Greece, chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Centre for Research on the Environment and the Economy and of the scientific advisory board of the EU Forest Institute. (Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) When heavy rain falls over the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and the eastern Pacific Ocean temperatures in California's Central Valley will reach 100 F (38 C) in 4 to 16 days, according to a collaborative research team from UC Davis, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Climate Center in Busan, South Korea. Researchers, including UC Davis Department of Land, Air and Water Resources professor Richard Grotjahn, were able to link the heat waves to the phases of a large, traveling atmospheric circulation pattern called the Madden-Julian Oscillation, or MJO. In this discussion he calls out important points from his book, co-authored by with Geoffrey Garver, "Right Relationship: Buildng a Whole Earth Economy.  Our current economic system—which assumes endless growth and limitless potential wealth—flies in the face of the fact that the earths resources are finite. The result is increasing destruction of the natural world and growing, sometimes lethal, tension between rich and poor, global north and south. Trying to fix problems piecemeal is not the solution. We need a comprehensive new vision of an economy that can serve people and all of lifes commonwealth.

Many critics claim that the problem with economics is that it has no theory of value.
