Conservation Talks feature short clips from leading minds in conservation. In this installment, Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the first female administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), discusses what she sees as the biggest challenge facing conservation science in a rapidly changing world.

Dr. Lubchenco's rare resumé includes serving as the first female president of the International Council for Science, president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Ecological Society of America, and a member of the National Science Board. She is also a Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University, with academic residencies at institutions like Stanford and Harvard.

The broader assembly convened over 125 grassroots and frontline women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries. Across 25 unique panels, participants presented diverse visions and strategies to accelerate a transformative path towards a healthy and just world.

Prominent Indigenous leaders participated, including Bryanna R. Brown, Janene Yazzie, Taily Terena, and Pluma Bárbara Moreno Torres, with moderation by Dr. Lyla June Johnston. These leaders represented diverse nations from Canada, Diné Bikéyah, Brazil, and Puerto Rico.

The assembly convened over 125 grassroots women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries. Across 25 panels, participants showcased varied visions and strategies to accelerate a transformative path toward a healthy and just world.

During Climate Week in New York City, WECAN held a virtual public event on September 26, 2024, titled “Transforming Global Economies: From Extraction to Regeneration in a Just Transition.”

Global women leaders shared insights on a Just Transition and innovative economic models, including community-led initiatives, feminist economics, Indigenous wisdom, and traditional practices of reciprocity with the Earth. This dynamic discussion highlighted a clear path to a thriving, socially just, and ecologically enriching future for all.

This panel brought together diverse global leaders, including Kahea Pacheco (Kanaka ʻŌiwi), Mariann Bassey Orovwuje, Monique Verdin (Houma Nation), Wilma Mendoza (Mosetén), and Yasso Kanti Bhattachan (Thakali). The Assembly united over 125 grassroots women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries, sharing visions and strategies for a just and healthy world across 25 unique panels.

Dr. Mehaffy is an internationally recognized urban development researcher, educator, and consultant. He directs the Sustasis Foundation, an Oregon non-profit focused on urban issues, and has held academic appointments in seven countries. His experience includes consulting for Portland and Metro, teaching at the University of Oregon, and managing the pioneering Orenco Station transit-oriented development.

With a keen interest in Portland's urban successes and lessons, Dr. Mehaffy considers the city a second home, though he now lives in the Columbia Gorge.

With a PhD in economics, Dr. Steer brings extensive experience from the World Bank, where he served as Special Envoy for Climate Change and held other senior roles. He is also a Commissioner for the Global Commission on Adaptation, a Global Agenda Trustee for the World Economic Forum, and a member of several key environmental and development initiatives.
