Dr. Cathy Fitzgerald's talk, "Stories for a Wiser Forestry," at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens on March 27, 2023, addressed "The Right Tree in the Right Place." Responding to urgent IPCC warnings, she advocates for wiser ecological permanent forestry as an alternative to ecocidal clear-fell monoculture, fostering enduring well-being.

Fitzgerald's work, including her Hollywood Forest Story blog at HollywoodForest.com, details transforming a 2-acre conifer plantation into a resilient mixed-species forest. The Programme fosters new transdisciplinary thinking, delivering practical insights, tools, and recommendations for decision-makers, alongside fundamental knowledge advancements. From 2022, it will be based at CISL’s new low-carbon, retrofitted building in Cambridge, creating a vibrant hub for collaborative research.

Last year, Dejah Powell founded Get Them to the Green (G2G) to foster environmental passion among Chicago youth, especially youth of color. G2G's first initiative was a summer camp, engaging 14 young people in environmental justice, sustainability, and food agriculture.

G2G has since partnered with Gardenneers to build a school garden at Powell’s elementary school, providing hands-on outdoor education. The organization also conducts environmental education workshops throughout the city.

Now a Cornell senior, Powell believes understanding environmental problems is key to solving them. She hopes urban environmental education will improve eco-literacy and help under-resourced communities access vital local and global conversations.

Astrophysicist Jill Tarter, who inspired Jodie Foster's character in *Contact*, dedicated her career to the search for extraterrestrial life. She now directs the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California.

Her path wasn't easy. After losing a scholarship despite excellent grades, Tarter appealed to Dean Corson. He agreed it was unfair and, after contacting Procter & Gamble, reinstated her funding.

Two decades later, Tarter, serving on President Corson's advisory committee at Cornell, personally thanked him for his belief and support.
