The Global Women's Assembly for Climate Justice: Path to COP30 and Beyond, hosted by the Women's Earth and Climate Network (WECAN) from June 23-28, 2025, featured the panel "Rematriating the Land: Indigenous Sovereignty and the Land Back Movement" on June 24.

Prominent Indigenous leaders participated, including Bryanna R. Brown, Janene Yazzie, Taily Terena, and Pluma Bárbara Moreno Torres, with moderation by Dr. Lyla June Johnston. These leaders represented diverse nations from Canada, Diné Bikéyah, Brazil, and Puerto Rico.

The assembly convened over 125 grassroots women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries. Across 25 panels, participants showcased varied visions and strategies to accelerate a transformative path toward a healthy and just world.

Ari Matusiak is CEO of Rewiring America, a nonprofit dedicated to electrifying 121 million U.S. households. His work addresses the fact that 42% of energy emissions originate from home decisions like heating, cooking, and driving, aiming to launch a nationwide electrification movement.

He is also Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Purpose Venture Group, an advisory firm building community-centered ventures to combat climate and economic inequality. Matusiak brings nearly a decade of executive leadership in renewable energy and household electrification.

Our most cherished sustainable farming practices, from organic agriculture to the farm cooperative, have roots in African wisdom, but discrimination and violence against African-American farmers have led to their decline from 14% of all growers in 1920 to less than 2% today. Furthermore, Black communities suffer disproportionately from food apartheid. Renowned longtime farmer, educator, author, and food sovereignty activist, Leah Penniman, explains the deep roots of this land loss and food injustice and shares the work she at Soul Fire Farm and others around the country in Black and Brown farming communities are doing to reclaim ancestral rights, renew ties to the land, achieve genuine agency in the food system, and advance food sovereignty. (Leah is also the sister of frequent Bioneers presenter Naima Penniman, half of the brilliant musical/spoken-word duo, Climbing PoeTree.)

Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol farmer, mother, Vodun Manye (Queen Mother), and award-winning food justice activist who has been tending the soil and organizing for an anti-racist food system for over 20 years. She currently serves as founding Co-Executive Director of Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, New York, a people-of-color led project that works toward food and land justice, which she co-founded in 2010. She is the author of: "Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm’s Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land."

Milne highlights the UN Decade for Ecological Restoration (2021-2030) and the potential restoration of Lake Pedder. Flooded in 1972, this pristine alpine lake is now a prime candidate for ecological restoration—a beacon of hope and a future success story.
