Alice uses the metaphor of an apple tree to describe the various factors that make up a healthy, sustainable economy. Alice Maggio is an advocate for place-based currencies and local economies. From 2012-2017 she worked at the Schumacher Center for a New Economics, starting as an intern and then as the Director of Programs and Executive Director of BerkShares, the Berkshire region’s local currency. Her work has focused on educating people in her own community and around the world about the role that local financial tools and institutions play in the development of vibrant, just, and sustainable economies. Alice has been interviewed by Paul Solmon for the PBS NewsHour and by Henry Rollins for the History Channel. She represented BerkShares and the Schumacher Center at International Conferences on Complementary Currency Systems in and Barcelona, New York, and Nova Scotia. A graduate of Mt Everett RS in Sheffield, MA, Alice received her B.A. in Sociology and French from Wesleyan University in 2010. She is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts. In 2021, approximately 75 million young people were unemployed, 408 million were employed, and 732 million were out of the labor force globally. World Youth Skills Day is commemorated on July 15th In this podcast, we hear from Alice Tipap, who is a member of the Maasai people of Tanzania. Alice talks to us about the youth in her region. The younger generation of the Indigenous populations can become assets to their communities if their potential is harnessed. They have the ability to transform the overall destiny of the indigenous community. Young people drive idealism, creativity, and entrepreneurship, and with appropriate support, they can help make the world a better place. Alice tells us about some of the challenges faced by the youth in her community. Grandmother Maria Alice Campos Freire talks about the Grandmothers and the challenges they face to fulfill their mission. Grandmother Maria Alice Campos Freire was born in Brazil. Growing up in Brazil she saw much war and persecution. At age 17, when pregnant with her daughter, Maria Alice was put in prison and tortured. Her daughter was born after Maria Alice became a political refuge in Europe and Africa before receiving amnesty to return to Brazil where she led a spiritual community in the deepest parts of the Amazon Rainforest reservation.
