Dr. Arman Hemmati shares the challenges that face climate change policy makers and how we can solve them! Arman Hemmati is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Alberta, and Principal Investigator for Future Energy Systems, where his research focuses on alternative energy systems. He is internationally renowned and received numerous awards for his research on fluid mechanics, aerodynamics and turbulence, as attested by his participation as an Official Expert Observer for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on multiple occasions. Dr. Joseph W. Dorsey is an Associate Professor in the Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGS) at the University of South Florida, Tampa, PCGS Academic Capstone Director, PCGS Concentration Director in Food Sustainability and Security, and the PCGS Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. His research interests include brownfield redevelopment; urban agriculture in developed and developing nations; sustainable food resource management strategies; and community economic empowerment initiatives. Dr. Dorsey has held faculty positions at Michigan State University, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and the University of South Florida – St. Petersburg. Prior to his doctoral career, Joseph was a Peace Corps Volunteer (maternity and child nutritionist) in Africa, a public health nutritionist in the Caribbean, and a clinical nutritionist in the United States. In his talk "Urban Agriculture and Food Security in the Age of Climate Change," he outlines ways we can live more sustainably in our urban communities. Dr. Joseph W. Wastewater is stinky, dirty and a serious problem for human health and the environment. However, there is potential for transforming this residue into a resource. Dr. Vinka Oyanedel-Craver is a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. Her current research interests in the area of emerging contaminants of drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater treatment, as well as the development of novel water technologies. Her current research focus is on environmental nanotechnology, specifically on the behavior and application of nanomaterials in different ecological compartments and their use as antimicrobial compounds in point of use water/wastewater treatment in rural developing communities. Sustainability: Toronto. July 2, 2010. Yes it's possible says Dr. Peter  Victor, Professor and past-Dean of Environmental Studies at York University. Economic growth is the over-arching policy objective of governments worldwide. Yet its long-term viability is increasingly questioned because of environmental impacts and impending and actual shortages of energy and material resources. Furthermore, rising incomes in rich countries bear little relation to gains in happiness and well-being . Growth has not eliminated poverty, brought full employment or protected the environment. Results from a simulation model of the Canadian economy suggest that it is possible to have full employment, eradicate poverty, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maintain fiscal balance without economic growth. It's time to turn our attention away from pursuing growth and towards specific objectives more directly relating to our well-being and that of the planet.
