As Portland revitalizes its Old Town/Chinatown, a neighborhood home to two National Historic Districts, there is renewed interest in preserving its architecture and reusing historic buildings. This panel will address the challenges of redeveloping these structures, explore better financial tools and incentives, suggest in-fill considerations, and discuss streamlining processes to attract private investment and restore buildings to full service.

Speakers include Brian Emerick (Emerick Architects), Julie Garver (Innovative Housing), Jeff Joslin (City and County of San Francisco), Peggy Moretti (Restore Oregon), and Ethan Seltzer (Portland State University). Chet Orloff (Pamplin International Collection of Art) will moderate the discussion.

Oceanographer John Delaney is leading a team to construct an underwater network of high-definition cameras and sensors. This project aims to transform our oceans into a global interactive lab, generating an abundance of data about the world below.

Delaney, a Professor of Oceanography at the University of Washington, is also Principal Investigator and Director of the Regional Scale Nodes Program, holding the Jerome M. Paros Endowed Chair in Sensor Networks. His innovative work is featured on TED.com.

Howard Zinn (1922-2010) delivered his talk, "The Myth of American Exceptionalism," at MIT on March 14, 2005. This was the inaugural lecture in the "Myths About America" series, organized by MIT's Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS).

Zinn, a renowned historian, playwright, and self-described democratic socialist, is best known for "A People's History of the United States" (1980). He previously chaired the history and social sciences department at Spelman College and served as a political science professor at Boston University.

John Hearin, Ph.D., explores the critical importance of our world's beaches as cultural treasures and vital economic engines. He will explain common methods for protecting these essential resources and how our decisions literally shape the shoreline.

Dr. Hearin, who grew up in Daytona Beach, holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology, where he also served as an Assistant Research Professor. With over 15 years of active involvement, he currently chairs the Cocoa Beach chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.
