Fashion designer and international manufacturing consultant, Aleem Arif talks about how fashion can play a vital role in tackling the existential threats posed by waste to our planet. Waste can, in fact, be fashionable. Aleem Arif graduated at the top of his class with a Masters in International Business from Boston University. He worked in finance for 3 years in Boston before moving to Canada and setting up Bano eeMee, a sustainable and ethically made luxury leather brand. Aleem won the Best Emerging Fashion Designer from North America in 2015 and presented his designs at Galleries Lafayette, Paris. Building on his fashion manufacturing experience, Aleem currently works with various high-end brands as a fashion manufacturing consultant and helps connect North American markets to high quality suppliers and manufacturers in South Asia. Join us for a lively conversation between Mary Power, a leading ecological researcher, and Tom Fleischner, the Institute’s founder, on the role of natural history in inspiring and grounding ecological field study and theoretical advances in the science of ecology. Over several decades, Dr. Power has combined field experiments and long-term, place-based research to study food webs in tropical and temperate rivers, and their linkages to upland and estuarine ecosystems—work that has always been informed by, and infused with, a love of natural history. Mary Power is a Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley and Faculty Director of the Angelo Coast Range Reserve. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow in the California Academy of Sciences, and she has served as president of both the Ecological Society of America and the American Society of Naturalists. Her work was profiled in The Serengeti Rules, a feature film.

For the past two years, Will Amos has led a student and faculty team at the University of California, Irvine in building an innovative recycling system that turns plastic waste into stock material

For the past two years, Will Amos has led a student and faculty team at the University of California, Irvine in building an innovative recycling system that turns plastic waste into stock material for 3D printing projects. The system includes four components: a grinder that breaks plastic waste into small pieces, an extruder that melts the broken plastic into lament, a spooler that prepares the lament for use in the printer and of course the printer. The only byproduct of the cradle-to-cradle system, which tackles the issues of overconsumption and plastic pollution, is water vapor. An environmental engineer by training, Amos is passionate about the role technology can play in solving environmental problems. But he believes that innovative research must be paired with education in order to achieve long-term change. That’s why his team has showcased the easily transportable recycling system on college and school campuses around Irvine, and at local TEDx events. At its core, his interactive and accessible project is one that seeks to educate.
