Simon Baron-Cohen, Professor of Developmental Psychopathology at the University of Cambridge and Fellow at Trinity College, discusses social factors that erode empathy. These include obedience to authority, ideological beliefs, stereotyping, and dehumanizing groups.

He directs the Autism Research Centre (ARC) in Cambridge. His notable books include *Mindblindness*, *The Essential Difference*, *Prenatal Testosterone in Mind*, *Zero Degrees of Empathy*, and *Autism and Asperger Syndrome: The Facts*. He is a Fellow of the BPS and the British Academy.

Jusen Asuka's talk, "Fall and Rise of Japan’s Climate Policy," addresses the nation's climate policy, which was active only briefly (e.g., the 1997 Kyoto Protocol) before becoming largely inactive. He proposes concrete steps for Japan’s green recovery to revive it.

Professor Asuka is with Tohoku University’s Center for Northeast Asian Studies. He previously directed the climate change group at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). Holding a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo and an MBA from INSEAD, his expertise spans energy and environmental policy, and international cooperation.

Doorae Shin fell in love with Hawai‘i's majestic landscapes as a freshman on O‘ahu, but was dismayed by Styrofoam litter and its devastating impact on marine ecosystems. In fall 2012, she partnered with the Surfrider Foundation to lead a student petition, gathering 1,000 signatures. This effort successfully prompted the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa to ban single-use foam packaging from all campus dining locations.

Following this campus victory, Shin spent two years advocating for a statewide Styrofoam ban. When that initiative failed, she joined efforts for a county-wide ban on O‘ahu. Shin will soon begin her role as the University of Hawai‘i system's first student sustainability coordinator.

Young, conservative, and Catholic individuals are increasingly advocating for climate action, driven by their faith and stewardship of the earth. Topher Anderson, a Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) volunteer, exemplifies this, citing his Catholic faith and Pope Francis's teachings as his motivation.

In March 2021, Topher met with Republican members of Congress, urging them to adopt climate solutions consistent with conservative values like small government and American ingenuity. He believes these principles are key to effective, nationwide solutions.

A federal judge denied the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's request for a temporary restraining order against the Dakota Access Pipeline's construction. The ruling stated the tribe failed to prove they would suffer preventable injury. The tribe aims to protect sacred sites from the $3.7 billion pipeline, designed to carry nearly half a million barrels of crude oil daily from North Dakota to Illinois.

Thousands from over 200 Native American tribes support the Standing Rock Sioux. Additionally, approximately 30 environmental groups oppose the pipeline, citing concerns about potential environmental disasters, particularly near the Missouri River.

The session also explored how to center climate action in Climate Justice and its intersection with Net Zero efforts.
