Honor the Earth is a Native-led organization, co-founded in 1993 by Winona LaDuke (Anishinaabe) and the Indigo Girls. Its mission is to combat the isolation of Native communities and increase financial resources for the Native environmental movement.

The film traces his journey from childhood in Omaha, Nebraska, through his leadership in the American Indian Movement, and his subsequent rebirth as a musician and spoken word poet following the tragic death of his wife in a suspected arson fire. Directed and produced by Heather Rae over more than a decade, "Trudell" aired nationally on PBS's Independent Lens series on April 11, 2006. Notable contributors include Robert Redford, Kris Kristofferson, and Sam Shepard.
