2020 has been promoted by FAO as the International Year of Plant Health, aiming to "Protect plants to protect life". In this regard, Tito Caffi - researcher at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart - illustrates the main objective of his research activity: to combine agriculture and sustainability, developing tools, techniques and strategies for crop protection. Professor Caffi graduated in Agricultural Science and Technology in 2003 at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and obtained the title of PhD with Doctor Europaeus label at the AgriSystem Doctoral School with the thesis "Epidemiology and modelling of grapevine downy mildew primary infections caused by Plasmopara viticola (Berk et Curt.) Berlese et de Toni ". Since 2003 he has attended the Institute of Entomology and Plant Pathology, with project contracts, scholarships, research grants and then as a PhD student and Post Doctorate Fellow. Since 2015 he is Researcher (lg. 240/10) at DIPROVES, Sustainable Crop Protection area. Join us for a virtual discussion with the three co-authors of Framers, which focuses on the essential tool that can enable humanity to find its way through the challenges of pandemics, populism, AI, ISIS, wealth inequity, climate change, and other worldwide problems that threaten our current civilizations. To frame is to make a mental model that enables us to see patterns, predict how things will unfold, and make sense of new situations. Frames guide the decisions we make and the results we obtain. Science has long focused on traits like memory and reasoning, but has often ignored framing. But with computers becoming better and better at those cognitive tasks, framing stands out as a critical function—and one only humans can do. Illustrating their case with compelling examples and the latest research, Cukier, Mayer-Schönberger and de Véricourt examine: why advice to “think outside the box” is useless; why the Wright brothers, with no formal physics training, were the first to fly; what enabled the 1976 Israeli hostage rescue at Entebbe to succeed; and how the MeToo twitter hashtag reframed the perception of sexual assault. They also show why framing Covid-19 as equivalent to a seasonal flu failed, and how modeling it on SARS succeeded in New Zealand. Framers shows how framing is not just a way to improve how we make decisions in an era of algorithms, but is also an ever more crucial tool in a time of societal upheaval and machine prosperity. We could use bio waste instead of mineral oil to produce plastic. Is this a modern fairy tale or already a reality? In her TEDx Talk, Andrea explains how we are already able to produce plastic from sources like chicory roots or grass and shares her vision & concepts for on-farm biorefineries that help to recycle nutrients in a sustainable way. Andrea Kruse studied chemistry at the University of Heidelberg and after having received her Ph.D. at the University of Heidelberg and the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (KIT today), she became junior group leader and later group leader in Karlsruhe. For her habilitation at the University of Darmstadt, Andrea focused on new concepts for the production of hydrogen from carbohydrates, one of the major components of biomass. Since 2012, Andrea is a professor for conversion technologies of bio-based resources at the University Hohenheim and has, among other research focuses, great interest in the conversion of biomass into basic chemicals and energy carriers. Besides her research efforts and lectures, Andrea is board member of a variety of committees and institutes as e.g. the Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) in Leipzig. Gerald Torres, Visiting Professor of Law, Yale Law School Treaties, Resource Use, and Environmental Conservation Treaties between tribes and the federal government have long been a source of contention. Their exact legal status and the rights that are attendant to them have generated a great deal of tension. This last term, the Supreme Court affirmed, by an equally divided court, the obligation of the states to manage resources consistent with treaty rights held by the tribes. The State of Washington has resisted the requirements derived from the set of treaties that make up the so-called Stevens’ treaties. The legal struggle has gone on for more than a hundred years. Those treaties affirm, among other things, the right of tribes to take salmon in common with non-Indians. The question facing the Court was what additional obligations do the states have to ensure the continued sustainability of the resource? This question, especially in times of climate disruption, is critically important to tribes and their members. Moreover, consistent enforcement of the obligations claimed by the tribes would also work to the benefit non-Indians and would cast a light on the structure of trust duties that are at the heart of a state to its people.

Dr. Cynthia Klein-Banai is a dynamic change agent and collaborative leader. She founded the UIC Office of Sustainability twelve years ago. Her team provides institutional value in supporting sustainability planning, projects, and reporting, while enhancing UIC’s mission of student success, improving public health, and serving the communities of Chicago. The Office promotes the UIC Climate Commitments of Carbon Neutral, Zero Waste, Net Zero Water, and Biodiverse University. She has helped advanced sustainable infrastructure at UIC through energy efficiency, renewable energy, grounds, water and stormwater management, waste and recycling, and transportation initiatives. Dr. Klein-Banai has a Ph.D. in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS) from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She also holds an adjunct assistant professor appointment within the School of Public Health. Dr. Robin Kimmerer is a mother, plant ecologist, writer and SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. She serves as the founding Director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment whose mission is to create programs which draw on the wisdom of both indigenous and scientific knowledge for our shared goals of sustainability.

She addressed the attendees at the Center for Humans and Nature's 2014 Forum on Ethics & Nature held at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The theme for the conference was "A Cascade of Loss, An Ethics of Recovery."
