Awareness about climate change and the consequences of our actions on the environment are on the rise, but that's just the first step in this long journey. Mehul Manjeshwar's mantra for a sustainable future is to look at people, planet and profits. The behind the scenes of a product is just as important as how the product is used and how it is disposed of. Mehul gives us a more wholesome perspective on the entire process and how it can be made to be more sustainable for the environment. Mehul Manjeshwar, born and raised in Qatar and Canada, currently leads the marketing and sustainability communications at Bare Necessities. He shares the story of the brand through meaningful partnerships, words, and actions. Being a firm believer in the impact of communication, raising awareness, and education being the foundation of change, he has always been passionate about sustainability. Mehul completed his MBA in the field to learn about the life cycle of products and how every process has an impact on the environment. He spent years studying and volunteering his time for environmental causes in Canada, Costa Rica, and Indonesia to raise awareness of the problems that our world faces today. Mehul is a Climate Reality Leader having had the opportunity to be trained during the Climate Reality Leadership Corps with former Vice President Al Gore among other knowledgeable experts in the sustainability field. He continually inspires communities to create a better lifestyle and live sustainably. With the conviction that the world is capable of finding a balance between technology and non-conformism, Mehul believes that sustainability is not about giving up either side completely but about finding the best of both worlds. Alexandra Morel will explore the topic of environmental change, relating to her expertise on the field of forests and their significance in the world. Dr. Alexandra Morel is a post-doctoral researcher in the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford. She has been enamoured with tropical forests since spending a semester in Costa Rica as an undergraduate and has been fortunate to perform research in the tropical forests of Malaysian Borneo, Ghana and Ethiopia. Her most recent research is focused on the interface of tropical forest ecology and smallholder agriculture, particularly relating to the ecological limits of poverty alleviation (www.ecolimits.org) as well as the important role ‘intact forests’ play in maintaining the global provision of ecosystem services (www.eci.ox.ac.uk/if21/). Her PhD research involved linking field measurements of forests with satellite imagery to estimate the carbon emissions from industrial-scale commodity production and the international governance efforts underway to control this forest loss. She has also worked on mapping human-environment coupled vulnerability in Haiti, the environmental sustainability of biofuel production in India and estimating the carbon-savings from forest conservation in a protected area in Ethiopia. A common thread throughout her research has been gaining a better understanding of the importance of forests both for mitigating climate change and for supporting our adaptation to it, which is an objective she plans to continue to pursue into the future. Writing: Benjamin Franta Video: Victoria Jamieson Editing: Chris North Benjamin Franta is a JD-PhD Candidate at Stanford Law School and the Stanford Department of History, where he studies the history of fossil fuel producers and climate change politics. He holds a separate PhD in applied physics from Harvard University, is a former research fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and helped to organize Harvard’s internationally-known fossil fuel divestment campaign. He has served as a consulting expert for climate change litigation, and his research and writing have appeared in Nature Climate Change, The Guardian, Project Syndicate, and elsewhere, translated into 10 languages, and cited in the US Congressional Record.
