Pessimistic predictions about the planet’s future have a long history and are increasingly common, but are they justified? In this talk, Professor Eric May describes why two of humanity’s greatest challenges – energy poverty and climate change – can both be solved if we can think clearly and realise the potential of hydrogen. Eric May is CEO of the Future Energy Exports CRC and the Chevron Chair in Gas Process Engineering at UWA. He is also the Director of the Australian Centre for LNG Futures and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. His research team works closely with industry on energy and Hydrogen production, refrigeration technologies, and carbon capture and storage. Eric was awarded the Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year as part of the 2012 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science. In 2017, he co-established Gas Capture Technologies Pty Ltd, a spin-out company for patented technologies to capture methane from coal mines, land-fill gas and other sources. Launched in 2020, the FEnEx CRC brings together $163 million in resources from industry and government to conduct industrial-scale research supporting LNG and Hydrogen exports from Australia. First, caloric restriction, typically a 20% reduction in overall calorie intake, has been linked to increased lifespan in several animal models. However, the positive effects may stem from avoiding overeating rather than restriction per se. Second, a plant-based diet, with less animal products and refined sugars and more fruits, veggies, and whole foods, seems beneficial for aging and longevity. Third, fasting, or limiting eating to specific time windows, might mimic the benefits of caloric restriction by causing 'hormesis', mild stressors that boost resilience to aging-related changes. The optimal diet is likely individual, influenced by factors like genetics and age, and should be monitored through measures of biological age and personal well-being. Author and economist Richard Thaler discusses "Nudge: The Final Edition", co-authored by Cass R. Sunstein, which demonstrates how best to nudge us in the right directions, without ever restricting our freedom of choice.

Every day people make decisions: about the things they buy or the meals they eat; about the investments they make and the time they spend; about their health and the health of the planet. Unfortunately, people often choose unwisely. Nudge: The Final Edition shows us that we are all susceptible to biases that can lead us to make bad decisions that make us poorer, less healthy and less happy. And, as Thaler and Sunstein show, it is not possible for choices to be presented to us in a neutral way. Given this fact of life, why not try to help people choose what is best for themselves, for their families and for society?

Richard H. Thaler was awarded the 2017 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to the field of behavioral economics. He is the Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is a member of the National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2015 he was the president of the American Economic Association. He has been published in numerous prominent journals and is the author of "Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioural Economics".

Join Michael Gerrard, Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice, Columbia Law School, Faculty Director for the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, and CCL Advisory Board member for a training on the Legal Pathways to Deep Decarbonization. His team's research provides a “legal playbook” for deep decarbonization in the United States, identifying well over 1,000 model laws based on two reports by the Deep Decarbonization Pathways Project (DDPP) that explain technical and policy pathways for reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% from 1990 levels by 2050. Gerrard will also identify changes needed in federal, state, and local law to help achieve these reductions and highlight ways that CCL volunteers can be engaged in highlighting these model laws out to federal, state, and local legislators. He is co-founder of the Democracy Collaborative. Alperovitz is the author of, "America Beyond Capitalism: Reclaiming Our Wealth, Our Liberty, and Our Democracy." In his remarks, Alperovitz stressed the importance of third-party politics to challenge a corporate-run society. "Systems in history are defined above all by who controls the wealth," Alperovitz says. "The top 400 people own more wealth now than the bottom 185 million Americans taken together.
