Researcher/Programmer Michalis Vitos and the ExCiteS team, which is based at UCL, created an app that allows the indigenous people of Congo to map the resources that are important to them and track trespasses from companies that operate in the area. Through a process that was eye-opening for both sides, researchers and indigenous people alike learned that technology, when designed with the user in mind, can be a valuable tool in protecting both the environment and the most isolated populations on the planet. Μπο�εί η τεχνολογία να σώσει τους ιθαγενείς και το πε�ιβάλλον τους; Ο ε�ευνητής/π�ογ�αμματιστής Μιχάλης Βίτος και η ομάδα ExCiteS του πανεπιστημίου UCL έφτιαξαν μια εφα�μογή που επιτ�έπει στους ιθαγενείς του Κογκό να καταγ�άφουν τους φυσικο�ς πό�ους που είναι σημαντικοί γι' αυτο�ς αλλά και να πα�ακολουθο�ν τις αυθαι�εσίες των υλοτόμων. Μέσα από μια διαδικασία που δίδαξε πολλά και στις δ�ο πλευ�ές, οι ε�ευνητές και οι ιθαγενείς διαπίστωσαν ότι η τεχνολογία, όταν σχεδιάζεται με επίκεντ�ο τον χ�ήστη, μπο�εί να γίνει ε�γαλείο π�οστασίας τόσο του πε�ιβάλλοντος όσο και των πιο απομονωμένων πληθυσμών του πλανήτη. Michalis is a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant, working with the ExCiteS research group at UCL (University College London). For the past 5 years he has been developing innovative mobile tools that can be used by semi-nomadic and non-literate indigenous communities in the Congolese rainforest to monitor environmental changes and resource extraction in scientifically validated ways. His research interests include the areas of Human-Computer Interaction and Software Engineering in combination with the emerging area of Participatory GIS and Citizen Science.
