The global food system is responsible for between 20-30% of greenhouse gas emissions, most of which are generated at the production stage. Take rice, for example, a food staple that is eaten regularly by over half the world’s population. Conventional rice production generates emissions equivalent to the entire global aviation industry. So how can we produce rice in a way that uses fewer resources and regenerates nature? A growing number of farmers around the world are changing the way they produce rice, by adopting an agroecological approach called the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). This method relies on a small group of simple interventions that together significantly reduces water use, methane production, and the use of chemicals, while providing better yields and reducing labour for rice farmers. Multinational companies who support this type of agriculture through procurement and product design can address their scope 3 emissions and build resilience in their supplier communities. According to Project Drawdown, SRI currently accounts for 4% of rice production. If this was increased to 25%, the emissions reduction would be equivalent to that which is currently generated by the whole of India. ------ Thank you for watching this video. A universal problem often begs a universal solution. However, there is no simple solution to the world’s increasingly pressing climate issues. Whether it be revamping infrastructure to adapt to sea level rise or funding efforts to mitigate further damages from emissions, whatever series of initiatives or plans of action we come up with will require a hefty sum of capital investment. Industry and corporations have played a large part in the development of the Anthropocene, nevertheless there is hope if we can find ways to reverse this trend and get corporate to work for climate, rather than against it. Devyn is a junior at Brown University out of Long Beach, California. During his time at Brown, he has worked with the University's curricular resource center to put together a new concentration in Environment and Enterprise, which studies the nexus of climate change, the private sector, and the sociocultural aspects of consumerism and capitalism. Currently, he is serving as the head of shareholder and community engagement for Brown’s Socially Responsible Investment Fund as well as interning with both the Office of Sustainability and the Brown Investment Office. He is also co-authoring a book chapter on the climate and economic resiliency of New England coastal cities. As the momentum towards building a Circular Economy grows worldwide, proponents search for examples that best illustrate what it would be like to live “Circularly.” Author and designer Azby Brown uses illustrations from his ground-breaking book “Just Enough” to show how Japan paved the way centuries ago. The Circular Economy model adheres so closely to Edo-period environmental resource and design principles that Edo can serve as an essential prototype and inspiration, demonstrating that living in a highly-developed Circular Economy can be comfortable, healthy, and beautiful. Azby Brown has lived in Japan for over 3 decades, developing a multidisciplinary practice spanning environmentalism, design, and the fine arts. His groundbreaking writings on traditional Japanese carpentry, compact housing, and traditional sustainable practices are recognised internationally. Since the start of the Fukushima disaster in March, 2011, he has been lead researcher for the global citizen-science organisation Safecast; engaged in assisting affected communities and analysing and reporting the issues they face. Where do our clothes go when we’re done with them? In a city like New York alone, 200 million pounds of clothing are being landfilled annually - that is the equivalent of over 440 Statues of Liberty. Globally, 73% of the materials used to produce clothing are landfilled or burned at the end of their life, while less than 1% of old clothing goes on to be used to make new clothes. Two recent campaigns - Wear Next (New York) and Love Not Landfill (London) - aimed to divert clothes from landfill and encouraged brands and citizens to embrace the new mindset and make our wardrobes really work. They say that whether it’s swapping them, selling them, donating or recycling them, it’s possible to work together to prevent clothing from ever becoming waste. More and more businesses are adopting circular economy strategies and pilots, but how do they understand and measure success on the path towards that goal? Circulytics is a new company-level analytics tool, created by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, that reveals the extent to which a company has achieved circularity across its entire operations. Developed in collaboration with a number of companies, including the Foundation’s 13 Global Partners, and tested by over 30 companies in 2019, Circulytics aims to: Measure a company’s entire circularity, not just products and material flows. Support decision making and strategic development for circular economy adoption. Demonstrate strengths and highlight areas for improvement. Provide optional transparency to investors and customers about a company’s circular economy adoption. Ilma Stankeviciute, Learning Designer at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation - creates business focused learning content for the circular economy learning hub as well as designs and facilitates various learning experiences online and face to face.
