ITU and partners annually encourage girls to pursue ICT careers, aiming to bridge the gender digital divide. Girls in ICT Day promotes studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), helping young women achieve their dreams and fostering digital gender equality.

This year’s theme is ‘Digital Skills for Life’. The global Girls in ICT event will be celebrated on April 27 in Zimbabwe, as part of the Transform Africa Summit 2023 (#TAS2023). Coordinated with POTRAZ and Smart Africa, the celebration will address digital skills topics like role models, education, mentorship, and youth participation.

Shaylan Kolodney, a junior Environmental Science student at Skidmore College, shares her unique thoughts on climate change. Her environmental passion ignited in high school after successfully campaigning to ban polystyrene in her cafeteria, an effort that later inspired her hometown's sustainable business practices.

Currently, Shaylan researches carbon farming at Caney Fork Farm. She also studied in Bhutan, investigating factors contributing to the rapid dieback of the Himalayan Blue Pine. Deeply interested in understanding humanity's role in the environment, she is driven to make a positive global impact.

Dineen O'Rourke leads youth climate action, heading a 14-member U.S. delegation to COP23 in Bonn, Germany. She works with SustainUs, a youth-led organization with 20 years of experience empowering young people at UN conferences. Her focus includes storytelling, direct actions, and international partnerships, building on her prior role at COP22 in Marrakech.

Domestically, O'Rourke actively resists fossil fuels. She mobilized against fracking projects and pipelines in New England, and co-founded the Sugar Shack Alliance. This nonviolent direct action group has trained hundreds in western Massachusetts to disrupt the fossil fuel industry.

Xinyi, a Senior 3 student at Nanjing Foreign Language School, is a highly accomplished public speaker. She is the national champion of both the 18th China Daily "21st Century Cup" National English Speech Contest (high school category) and the 2020 "Star of Hope and OUTLOOK SUPERSTARS." Xinyi firmly believes that speaking is essential to discovering a language's true beauty.

Beyond her own success, Xinyi selflessly mentors young speakers at NFLS, constantly refining her tutoring approach. She presides over the school's English Speech Club and excels in both American and Chinese debate. Xinyi is also an experienced host, having led events like the New Year's Eve Light Party and the Foreign Language Festival.
