Press Conference– Rights of Nature: A Systemic Solution to the Climate Crisis; COP28, Wednesday, December 6, 2023, 5:30 PM - 6:00 PM

During COP28, WECAN hosted a series of events highlighting the powerful voices of women leaders in all of their diversity from around the world!

Rights of Nature articulates a new legal framework and economy based on living in balance with Earth’s natural systems. Presenters shared successes from the Rights of Nature movement, and how it can offer a systemic framework for defending biodiversity, communities, and our climate.

On December 5, WECAN hosted our formal UN Side Event at COP28, “Women Implementing Climate Justice Solutions to Mitigate and Adapt to the Climate Crisis.” During the side event, grassroots, Indigenous and frontline women, and representatives of global organizations presented climate justice strategies and solutions, including forest and biodiversity protection, Indigenous rights, agro-ecology, renewable energy and a Just Transition, fossil fuel phase out and divestment, and protection of women land defenders.

Speakers included: Lucy Mulenkei (Maasai), Executive Director, Indigenous Information Network, Kenya; Eriel Tchekwie Deranger (Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation), Executive Director, Indigenous Climate Action, Canada; Braulina Baniwa (Baniwa), Executive Director, National Articulation of Indigenous Women Ancestrality Warriors (ANMIGA), Brazil; Taily Terena (Terena Nation), Indigenous rights activist, WECAN Coordinator in Brazil, Brazil; Casey Camp Horinek (Ponca Nation), Ponca Nation Environmental Ambassador and WECAN Board Member, Turtle Island, USA; Osprey Orielle Lake, Executive Director, Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), USA

During the event we also had a special appearance by Sonia Guajajara, Minister of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil, who shared a powerful testimony to the leadership of women in Brazil and globally. We are honored to have worked with Minister Guajajara for the past several years, and to see her continue her advocacy efforts in her newly appointed position.

The Great Lakes are under attack, and Indigenous women and allies are rising to shutdown Line 5!

Operating 20 years past its engineered life span, Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline is threatening 20 percent of the world’s surface freshwater at a time of climate crisis, putting at risk sacred ecosystems, clean drinking water, treaty territories, and our global climate.

Tribal leadership, Indigenous leaders, environmental groups and allies are calling for the immediate shutdown and decommissioning of Line 5. Instead of shutting down Line 5, Enbridge is proposing to expand the pipeline, despite strong opposition.

Enbridge's proposed new route will cut through hundreds of waterways that flow into the Bad River Reservation, their extensive fisheries, the navigable waters of Lake Superior, and the Straits of Mackinac.

The existing Line 5 pipeline must be shut down and decommissioned, not simply re-routed and expanded. As climate catastrophes impact communities world wide, it is imperative to stop the expansion of all fossil fuels now!

On International Women's Day 2024 we are releasing a new WECAN video that highlights the advocacy of global women leaders fighting to end the era of fossil fuels while advancing a Just Transition and advocating for climate solutions, Indigenous and human rights, rights of nature, and thriving communities and planet.

On March 13, WECAN was in Washington D.C. outside the Army Corps of Engineers offices with the Indigenous Women’s Treaty Alliance to deliver a petition calling on the Army Corps of Engineers

On March 13, WECAN was in Washington D.C. outside the Army Corps of Engineers offices with the Indigenous Women’s Treaty Alliance to deliver a petition calling on the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a robust environmental review of the Line 5 crude oil pipeline reroute.

Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline has continued to operate illegally through the Bad River Band’s land in northern Wisconsin and the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan. Despite strong opposition, Enbridge is moving forward with a proposed reroute and expansion of the pipeline. The existing Line 5 pipeline must be shut down and decommissioned, not simply re-routed and expanded. At a time of climate crisis, Line 5 is putting at risk sacred ecosystems, clean drinking water, treaty territories, and our global climate!

The petition was delivered by members of the Indigenous Women’s Treaty Alliance, alongside allies from WECAN, Sierra Club, and the broader community. Since 2022, WECAN has been honored to facilitate the Indigenous Women’s Treaty Alliance, a group of Indigenous women leaders from the Great Lakes region.

The "Escazú Agreement Toolkit for Women Land Defenders and Frontline Communities" equips women to navigate their country's laws to achieve the protections of the Escazú Agreement. One of the most important things we can do to protect and defend Mother Earth is to stand up and support women land defenders globally!

During this virtual event at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), Indigenous youth leaders from around the world gathered to share their strategies and solutions for addressing fossil fuel extraction, deforestation and the climate crisis on Thursday, April 18th, 2024.

Drawing upon Indigenous knowledge, panelists discussed efforts to defend Indigenous rights, champion self-determination, and promote climate justice to forge a path toward a healthy and just climate future.

Indigenous knowledge is a climate solution! At the epicenter of massive fracking in Oklahoma, Casey Camp-Horinek (Ponca Nation) Environmental Ambassador, WECAN Earthen Lodge Project Coordinator and Board Member, and her community are leading a renewed approach to food sovereignty and climate solutions with the building of the Earthen Lodge, originating from Indigenous wisdom and knowledge of the Ponca Nation.

The Earthen Lodge is stewarded by the Pa'tha'ta Women's Society in the Ponca community, as they seek seventh generation survival and beyond for their Nation in the midst of the escalating climate crisis. WECAN is honored to work in collaboration on this project, which is supporting community resiliency in the face of extreme fossil fuel extraction and ongoing climate disruption. The Lodge will provide safe harbor in times of climate disaster; offer space for cultural ceremonies and teachings; and create healthy and sustainable food and medicines for current and future generations in a region where the water and soil has been poisoned by Big Oil for decades.
