From April 4-6, 2012, the Indigenous Environmental Network hosted a three-day Rights of Mother Earth Conference at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. This video features a presentation from the conference. Additional coverage is available on the IENearth YouTube Channel.

The presentation includes closing remarks, stressing that land degradation stems from ignoring Indigenous Knowledge. It challenges viewers to choose between disregarding sustainable systems and embracing the ancient wisdom that sustained people for millennia.

This session will feature their leadership and solutions, exploring how to best support their efforts. Panelists include Yana Tanagasheva (Batani Fund), Valentina Sovkina (Russian Indigenous Women Network), Hanne Svinsas Magga (Sámi Center for Psychological Support), and Panganga Pungowiyi (Indigenous Environmental Network).

Dr. Dan Wildcat, Director of the Haskell Environmental Research Studies (HERS) Center and Dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences at Haskell Indian Nations University, delivered this report.

John Wick and the Marin Carbon Project are developing innovative carbon farming practices based on their research of the carbon cycle’s impact on soil. These practices draw down dangerous levels of atmospheric carbon and sequester that carbon in the soil where it becomes an agricultural asset. More carbon in the soil increases fertility and yields and make farms more resistant to droughts. If adopted on a global scale, carbon farming can make agriculture a driving force that will help solve the climate crisis and cool the planet.

She spoke powerfully about the state and personal violence perpetrated against Indigenous women and men during the Dakota Access pipeline resistance.
