There are about 500 million smallholder farmers around the world. They produce much of the world’s food using only a small fraction of agricultural land and resources. Ironically, this is the group that suffers disproportionately from hunger, poverty and impacts of climate change. Improving the way small farms are designed and managed so that they’re more productive and profitable is an important mechanism for dealing with these issues in a systemic way. Emma Naluyima, a farmer in Uganda, has demonstrated that it is possible to produce abundant and diverse food on a one-acre farm while reducing inputs and increasing profits. She does this through the circular management of resources, a focus on healthy soils, and the application of appropriate technology. Global estimates show that about one billion tons of organic waste is produced annually by cities. Managing this waste is costly, meaning that it is often simply dumped, leading to carbon emissions, pollution and vermin. Insects could offer a holistic issue to the challenge of urban organic waste. Their efficiency in safely converting organic waste into food, feed and nutrient-rich compost is well-proven. In this film, we hear from two companies, Sanergy and InsectiPro, about how insects can transform waste into profits and how soil fertility can be a key component of a circular economy for food in cities.
