The US Government kneecapped the federally recognized Mashpee Wampanoag tribe by de-establishing their reservation trust land in the middle of the Corona pandemic. This decision is especially poignant because 2020 marks the 400 year anniversary of the arrival of the pilgrims, who settled on top of an empty Wampanoag village, abandoned because up to 90% of the tribe had died of a similar epidemic introduced by European traders that ravaged the community from 1616-1620. Despite this devastating loss, the Wampanoag still helped the Pilgrims to survive, and they still remain on their ancestral homelands, now threatened by the US Department of the Interior. Her father urged her to get out, saying “There is nothing for you here, pet.” Hill went on to study in Moscow and at Harvard and served under three United States presidents. But in both Russia and the United States, she saw troubling reflections of her hometown and similar populist impulses. Her new book, There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century, draws on her own journey out of poverty and her unique perspective as a policymaker to warn that America is on the brink of socioeconomic collapse and an authoritarian swing that could rival modern Russia. Fiona has been vegan since she was 6 years old and in 2013, she won both the Antarctic Ice Marathon and the North Pole Marathon. She runs despite losing a kneecap from an illness when she was 17. She founded Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary, is an ambassador for The Vegan Society, and is a patron of the Captive Animals Protection Society. Fiona joins us to discuss her many distance running achievements and how supporting animal welfare is the driving force behind all of her successes. In this educative talk, Mr. Palumbo shares the history transportation in the United States and what the future might look like if we take action towards a sustainable life. Is a mechanical engineer and a lifelong resident of Southampton, NY where he currently serves as the Executive Director of Sustainability Programs at Suffolk County Community College. Along with a team of advocates Nick is developing “action oriented environmental projects” throughout the county. His advocacy and concern for the community has led him to become a member of both the Board of Architectural Review & Historic Preservation and the Planning Board for the Village of Southampton, and the Board of Education for the Southampton School District. His experience as a former US Naval Officer, has created the need promote water safety and environmental awareness through the recently formed Southampton Village Ocean Rescue Team. And tackling the issues of transportation and how it will continue to impact life on Long Island and similar communities world-wide.
