Recently, an equally divided Supreme Court affirmed states' duty to manage resources consistent with tribal treaty rights. This ruling impacts states like Washington, which has resisted requirements from the Stevens' treaties, affirming tribal salmon fishing rights. The critical question remains: what additional state obligations ensure resource sustainability, especially amidst climate disruption? Consistent enforcement benefits all, illuminating the state's trust duties to its people.

On March 29, 2010, the coalition Keep Nestle Out of the Gorge, led by Food & Water Watch, launched a campaign against Nestle Waters North America. They opposed a proposed water bottling facility in Cascade Locks, Oregon, fearing it would commodify public water resources and endanger native salmon and steelhead.

While the iconic Chesapeake Bay blue crab is a sustainable "best choice" with recovering stocks, its relative scarcity keeps prices high. This forces local watermen and businesses to compete with mislabeled, often irresponsibly sourced imported blue swimming crab from unregulated fisheries in India and Southeast Asia.
