It’s alarming to know that a third of the world’s population doesn’t have access to safe drinking water today. And by 2025, this number could double. In her talk, Vivian explains why it is so important for children like her to understand the importance of conserving water for future generations, and how they could go about doing it. Vivian is a friendly 10-old girl who loves to play musical instruments. She enjoys painting bright and vivid scenes like sunsets. In her spare time, she likes to dance, learn languages, and practice public speaking. Vivian aspires to be a fashion designer when she grows up. In her personal story on how she not only challenged herself but also others, Maike Sippel lies out key questions everyone has to consider when taking action. She reports how her research provides the equipment to becoming a powerful change-agent for a save and vital future. Maike Sippel is Professor of Sustainable Economics at the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz, Germany. Thinking about a major task of our generation – shape changes toward a climate-friendly society – she works on projects at the interface between knowledge and social reality. However, Sippel is more than a scientist. Throughout her career, she has been actively engaged in consulting and initiatives to make sure our beautiful planet is preserved for future generations. Her passion lies in projects at the interface between knowledge and social reality and in creating space for transition initiatives to develop. Her academic career led her from studies of architecture (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT), to a PhD in economics (University of Flensburg and Hamburg Institute of International Economics) and consulting and Post-Doc activities (among others at the Institute of Energy Economics and Rational Energy Use at the University of Stuttgart). She was appointed professor in Konstanz in 2013. Sippel started to work on sustainability issues during her studies. She has since contributed to sustainablity projects and research - from the personal and local level to the global.
