Alice Maggio, an advocate for place-based currencies and local economies, uses an apple tree metaphor to describe the factors essential for a healthy, sustainable economy. Her work focuses on educating communities about the role of local financial tools in fostering vibrant, just, and sustainable economies.

From 2012-2017, Alice served as Director of Programs and Executive Director of BerkShares, the Berkshire region’s local currency, at the Schumacher Center for a New Economics. She has been interviewed by PBS NewsHour and the History Channel, and represented her work at international conferences.

He has held significant roles, including past-president of the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada and is currently the Director of the Division of Aboriginal Peoples' Health at UBC.
